UK PREMIERE - If being introduced by both THE ORPHANAGE’s JA Bayona and 28 WEEKS LATER’s Juan Carlos Fresnadillo during this year’s Cannes Critic’s Week wasn’t enough of a recommendation, director Gabe Ibanez’ atmospheric Spanish chiller also comes from the producers of PAN’S LABYRINTH. Maria (Elena Anaya) is taking her young son Diego on holiday to the remote island of El Hierro (Europe’s southernmost tip) when he suddenly vanishes on the ferry trip. The assumption is he’s fallen overboard…but six months later, a child’s body is discovered. Left alone on the island while results of a DNA test are carried out on the decomposing corpse in the morgue, wild fantasy takes over Maria’s desperate hopes as she learns of another missing boy. The unusual location, stunning cinematography and Guillermo del Toro-style surreality keep the slick scares and mysterious intrigue flowing as the wonderfully cast Anaya gets submerged into her deepest and darkest fears.
