DinoMarabaseWritten & Directed by Brad Watson, Starring Kelly Adams, Jonathan Rhodes, Lucy Evans, Calita Rainford, David Horton. Horror/Thriller, UK, 90 minutes.

DVD release date: 23rd August 2010.

Besotted student Zoe (Lucy Evans) and her best friend Sarah (Kelly Adams) travel across London so that Zoe can be reunited with her tutor and lover Malcolm (David Horton). Located in his penthouse flat, Malcolm is with his two other computer geek friends who run a pirate underground internet radio station. This is a front however, as the computer geeks real objective is to hack into the Vatican’s security system, find the biblical code, which may give every answer known to man, or possibly be able to predict the future. Unfortunately they open up pandora’s box instead!

Following a one night stand, Zoe realises she is in love with Malcolm. Giving up her college course so they can be together, she convinces Sarah to come with her to confront Malcolm about how she feels. Once they arrive at the flat, they are greeted by Malcolm and his two strange guests, Kendra (Calita Rainford) and the wheelchair bound Declan (Jonathan Rhodes). Intrigued by the room full of computers, monitors and equipment, they find out that the trio are broadcasting an underground radio station called Beacon 77.

Malcolm and Zoe realise they are in love and head off, as does Sarah, however turns of fate draw them all back to the flat when Declan and Kendra manage to hack into the Vatican’s security system. Declan explains that the objective is to locate a 3rd dimensional version of the bible code, which is the ultimate source of power and information. This seems to trigger a psychic ability in Zoe who can see some kind of unexplained supernatural entity. Before long, the film then starts to move in different directions, shifting from thriller into more of a sci-fi/horror direction, as it builds towards a dramatic climax.

This is a slow burn of a film, set largely in one location (the flat) and with the five main characters for almost all of movie. The premise is good as it has some clever ideas about the universe and tries to tackle some of the parallels between science and religion. Unfortunately however, the film is also confusing at times and together with the pacing of the film, this makes it difficult to hold your attention.

This is a reasonable effort from director Brad Watson to make something slightly different and interesting. The characters/acting is very good especially given the low budget. Overall however it is quite a difficult film to grasp at times and doesn’t quite fulfil its potential.

Extras: making of documentary (not reviewed).
