1st February 2011.

Last week I found out the truth of that wonderful Italian saying, “Revenge is a dish best eaten cold”. It really is and, as a result, I’m still feeling great about one particular news story from the tabloids. You may have read the headlines about religious advisors, wife beatings and worse. Well one of the person’s involved, obviously many years before these revelations, was on a TV programme with me debating horror films and screen violence in the wake of the Video Nasties drama. They called me “The living dead” for my unshakeable views on the subject basically revolving around the fact that nothing I’ve ever seen in the cinema or on video has made me go out and copy it. Okay, once, but that GREASE 2 leather jacket fetish really is another story! Time and time again these supposed do-gooders with such high moral values are unmasked as the complete opposite. The list really is endless. Yet people who should know better still give this venal vermin the time of day.

Don’t get me started on the whole religious aspect to this either. The more I see what people do in the name of their imaginary friends and events in fairytale books regarding sexism, racism and homophobia the more pathetic I think they are. It’s taken nearly 25 years for me to feel vindicated, not that I cared then or now about what people label me, but it certainly put a smile on my face and yet again adds resonance to that whole dodgy debate so masterfully highlighted in Jake West and Marc Morris’s recent DVD release. Looking forward to appearing in the sequel boys!

It’s still going on of course. Currently the Bible Belt and assorted Pressure Groups are up in arms over the US version of the British TV import ‘Skins’.  Excuse me, you lot took us into an illegal war, but a bare arse on MTV is so much more shocking. Get a grip. Actress Denise Richards (remember her?) has called the show ‘disgusting’. Like she’d know anything as my interview with her on the Bond movie THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH proved. I’m still amused by her comments about Paris culture. Meanwhile her ex husband Charlie Sheen goes to rehab, but his bad behaviour supposedly adds ratings for his naff sit-com. The good thing is that many advertisers have pulled their spots from the ‘Skins’ show. Finally something good comes out of the ludicrous situation. Junk food manufacturers won’t peddle their wares because of casual drug use in the programme. Yet the drugs are probably less toxic than their supersized fake cheese whatevers.

Puritans and prudes, don’t you just love them for their ability time-and-time again to put a programme/film/website/video game/book on everyone’s radar so people are instantly alerted to watch, read and access? They never learn. And when the Parents Teachers Council in the ‘Skins’ instance, a dangerous group in the Mary Whitehouse vein of arrogant stupidity, are soon surely to be revealed as closet transvestites, hooker addicts, coke freaks and porn fanatics, don’t be in the least bit surprised.

Until the next time...

Alan Jones.
