UK Premiere
A thrilling cinematic work crafted with dark nuance and graceful skill, this twisty homage to film noir, Alfred Hitchcock and the Coen brothers is a master class in white-knuckle suspense brimming with the promise of great things to come for debut director Paul China and star Georgina Haig. Claustrophobic heat and brooding tension seep from the screen in this character-driven hi-tone chiller set in an unknown rural town. Seedy bar owner Slim Walding hires a mysterious Croatian hit man to murder a local garage owner over a shady business deal gone bad. The crime is indeed carried out by the stone-faced stranger but a planned double-crossing backfires and innocent waitress Marilyn Burns (a reference to the original TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, one of many nods to horror history) suddenly becomes involved. She’s at home looking forward to the return of sweetheart Travis because she’s sure tonight’s the night he’s going to propose. But on the dark, single lane road that runs past Marilyn’s house, the lives of Travis and the killer intersect, and Marilyn’s romantic evening becomes a struggle for survival when the Croatian psychopath takes her hostage in her own home. Much of what makes this study in slow-burning terror so nail-bitingly effective is the silence that China employs for long periods, coupled with the fluid camerawork, crisp lines and deep, shadowy corners of the picture frame – and minds of the captivating lead characters. Because you are never going to guess what Slim’s dirty little secret is…
