Roger Corman was the true Godfather of independent filmmaking and this fabulous documentary tracks the triumphant rise of the legendary writer, director and producer widely known for his high camp, low budget, rapid fire exploitation movies of the 1950s and 60s. While known for working fast – LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS was made in two days - and wallowing in the world of trashy monsters, bad special effects, schlock acting and plentiful nudity, Corman is also a well-respected maverick and rabble-rouser. He dealt with hot-button social topics like race (THE INTRUDER), drugs (THE TRIP) and feminism (THE STUDENT NURSES) long before they were trends and in fact made them important pasts of the future cinema fabric. He created his own production and distribution company and he discovered and taught the next generation of film greats including Martin Scorsese (BOXCAR BERTHA), Jonathan Demme (CAGED HEAT), Francis Ford Coppola (DEMENTIA 13), Peter Bogdanovich (TARGETS), Joe Dante (PIRANHA), James Cameron (visual effects for BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS and GALAXY OF TERROR) and even Ron Howard (GRAND THEFT AUTO). From Corman’s first 1955 feature THE MONSTER FROM THE OCEAN FLOOR through the Edgar Allan Poe/Vincent Price horrors and Hell’s Angels flicks to his latest production DINOSHARK, all the blood and guts of his lurid and fascinating brilliance on a budget career is here illustrated by great clips and with insights from his contemporaries, students, stars - and a Jack Nicholson like you’ve never seen him before.
