Released in the UK on DVD by Anchor Bay Entertainment, £5.99. Out Now. Scientist Nathan Sands (Eric Roberts) has created a new aquatic super weapon for the US Military. A genetically modified cross between a Shark and an Octopus resulting in a Sharktopus. The creature (codenamed S11) is fitted with an electrical impulse system which enables it to be controlled at command. After an accident damages the system however, the creature is set loose. Can it be stopped before it creates havoc on the Puerto Vallarta Mexican shoreline? Whilst still a prototype, the initial test phase of the S11 is successful under the control of Sands beautiful daughter, Nicole (Sarah Malakul Lane). Eager to see more of the Military’s investment in action however, Commander Cox (Calvin Persson) instructs Sands to track a passing speedboat in the ocean. All is going well until an accident with the boat destroys the S11's control system. S11 is now free and loose, and with Sands having modified the creature (unbeknown to his daughter), it has been programmed to kill at will. The S11 begins to move its way south across the shoreline, eating and killing innocent civilians on the various beaches. In the main these are pretty girls in bikini's, and so the creature clearly has some taste! Instructed by Commander Cox to capture the S11, Sands tracks down his former employee and best man for the job, Andy Flynn (Kerem Bursin). Assisted by Nicole, the plan is to track down the creature and inject it with a special tranquiliser dart, which will enable them to regain control. They don't know that the S11 has been modified however, and the task at hand is much more dangerous than they realise. With only 2 darts available, and attractive reporter Stacy Everheart tracking the story, will they be able to stop the S11? Sharktopus is a silly movie with a limited plot, wooden acting and poor CGI. In some ways however this is part of its appeal, and I guess what you would expect from a film based on such a wacky concept. It’s reasonable fun in a bad (Z Movie) type of way, and the sort of straight to DVD nonsense you would expect from the director of Wrong Turn 3 (Declan O’Brien ). Produced by Roger Corman, this will probably attract the attention of the Mega Shark and Mega Piranha film fans for example, but if you want something a bit more intellectually stimulating, then it’s probably best to look elsewhere.
