Based on the novel ‘DIE DAMALSTUER’ by AkIf Pirincci, Germany’s answer the Stephen King, comes this dark more fable about on mans attempt at a second chance.

One summers day, a successful painter & father, David Andernach (Mads Mikkelson - CASINO ROYALE) decides that instead of taking his daughter, Leonie, to the forest to catch butterflies, he will spend the afternoon having sex with mistress Gia. Upon returning home David finds his daughter drowned at the bottom of the family pool.

Five years later grief stricken David, now a divorced drunken state who hasn’t picked up a paint brush in years, tries to drown himself in the same pool. After being rescued and heading back to try again David spots a blue winged butterfly that leads him to A hidden tunnel covered by a wooden door. At the end of the tunnel David finds himself back five years previous to the exact point that his daughter falls into the pool.

But after accidently killing his past self David, finds that his chance of redemption could soon fade away.

THE DOOR is beautifully directed Supernatural thriller with a brilliant cast and an amazing soundtrack. It felt like the type of film THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT could of being if it was directed by Del Toro. The storyline could have been done so badly, but the style and direction of the film made it a work of art. If you are not a fan of foreign cinema then I can say with confidence that you give this film a try it may change your mind.

Mark Goddard.
