Its 2002 and I’m sitting in a screening room on Charlotte street in London. I’ve been invited to the first UK press screening of a little known movie named ‘Cabin Fever’ – described as the new ‘Evil Dead’ and directed by an unknown - Eli Roth. The next ninety-three minutes of my life was spent squirming at an unnatural amount of puss, blood, vomit and people sliding large sections of skin from their bodies as a flesh eating virus attacks the casts systems. Bloody brilliant – exactly the type of movie I fancied that night – and the rest is History. Cabin Fever went on to be a massive success – propelling the mighty Eli Roth to Super stardom and making him one of the biggest names in Horror today. Can you imagine this summer without the Bear Jew?
Fast forward eight years and here I am about to watch ‘Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever’ – a film if I’m honest I wasn’t overly eager to see. This time I know what to expect, there’s no Eli Roth and it is set in a ‘fucking ‘High school.
It always pays not to go judge things to early. A book, they say, shouldn’t be judged by its cover, nor a DVD by its predictable setting. I enjoyed 83 minute of utter madness and genuine fun.
The story starts right where the last one ended- Ryder Strong reprising his role as Paul stumbling out of the woods to a nearby roadside. Cut to the Local town as the teenagers prepare for an evening of drink and first sexual experiences at their High school Prom night. As the party kicks off our teenage hero’s start to realise all is not as it should be. Bring on the classic gore, blood, puss and vomiting from the original movie.
Meanwhile – also returning from the original, Deputy Winston (Giuseppe Andrews) discovers that the bottled water distributed throughout the town is contaminated with the deadly flesh eating Virus.
As the story unfolds - an armed security team arrive to lock down the school and decontaminate the area. The Virus spreads throughout the school and our heroes’ do all they can to dodge infested classmates and try to find a way to escape. Will anyone survive the Virus – there’s only one way to find out?
There’s no massive twist or turns. The film pretty much runs as you would expect it too – but it’s very much in the spirit of Roth’s original vision. It has a nice dark sense of humour to it.
Is this film as good as the first Cabin Fever flick – perhaps not but is it a worthy sequel. If you enjoyed the first one then Cabin Fever 2 is really worth watching. It’s cracking fun – and still got all the gory gross-out elements expected from the brand.
I liked this movie and know that it will do well when it’s released on DVD. Role on the third film, however this time let’s not wait another eight years!
Also – if you fancy seeing the original Cabin Fever in a new High-Definition ‘Directors cut’. Go buy the Blu-Ray the same day as the sequel. Cabin Fever: Directors Cut out 22nd February
