Directed by Rob Zombie, Starring (voices) Tom Papa, Rosario Dawson, Sherie Moon Zombie, Paul Giamatti. Animation (Horror), USA, 77 minutes.
DVD and Blu-ray UK release date: 22 February 2010, 18. BUY NOW.
Washed up former professional masked wrestler El Superbeasto (Tom Papa) now spends his days making outrageous porno movies, and occasionally fighting crime (a good reason if any for animated scenes of sex, action or violence). Elsewhere, former nerd boy and now villain Dr. Satan (Paul Giamatta) must find the woman with the devil’s mark and make her his bride, which will turn him into Satan so he can wreck havoc on the world. El Superbeasto must save the day!
Based on the successful Rob Zombie comic book, this adult animation has lots of everything your typical fanboy needs for entertainment. From the neat opening scene (sex, breasts, medusa, werewolves, pizza!) to nazi zombies, Hitler’s head in a jar, voluptuous girls, machine guns, boobs, bums, gore, action and some funky music, it’s what you expect from Mr Zombie.
After visiting the local strip joint, El Superbeasto becomes transfixed with the sexy stripper Velvet Von Black (Rosario Dawson), however unbeknown to him, Velvet is the eponymous bride sought after by Dr Satan. Velvet is captured by Dr Satan’s sidekick gorilla, and El Superbeasto must go to the rescue (clearly with the incentive of wanting to bed Velvet afterwards). Calling on his foxy crime fighting sister Suzi X (Sherie Moon Zombie), she reluctantly breaks off from fighting the nazi zombie army to help her brother track down Dr Satan to his lair to stop the unholy union and save the world. With various escapades in-between (including the inconvenience of our hero being captured by Dr Satan), El Superbeasto manages to escape to team up with his sister again for the final showdown.
Running at 77 minutes long, this animated feature is a lot of fun and doesn’t outstay its welcome. The story is relatively simple (ie not too taxing!), but the pace is good and there are lots of cameo characters popping in and out of the film (eg Michael Myers, Leatherface, Captain Spaulding). The voiceover cast is impressive and must have had a lot of fun. Whilst this movie won’t win any awards, and it may not appeal to anyone easily offended, there is enough in here for genre fans (particularly Rob Zombie fans or anyone who likes adult cartoons) to make this worth checking out. For the right crowd, it should work particularly well on a Friday night, DVD ready, with a few friends and some cans of lager!!
Extras: generally pretty good including: deleted scenes, alternate scenes, full length animatic, stills gallery, trailer.
Dino Marabese.
