Re: Kill List

I found the unsettling shifts in tone, style and genre in 'Kill List' to be it's greatest strengths. Sure, the plot was heavily indebted to the likes of The Wicker Man & Race With The Devil, but the slow building dread of some unknown evil at work behind the scenes; through the mark on the mirro...

Re: Rabies

Probably my favourite film of the weekend; funny, moving, shocking and completely unpredictable. Like the Coen Brothers directing a re-make of Mario Bava's 'Bay of Blood'. In Israel. Fantastic. And, next to the tremendous Larry Fessenden, the 2 directors were the best guests of the weekend; charming...

Re: Trailer Trash!

Awesome selection of Trailer Trash this year, thanks! Having watched Jess Franco's 'Lorna The Exorcist' on DVD the night before setting off for Frightfest the trailer for 'Linda' had me laughing out loud. Come on Total Film, how about sponsoring an 'Icon of Horror' spotlight on Franco for next years...

Re: Outcast

I really enjoyed how 'Outcast' transplanted it's Celtic magic and mythology into a really grimy urban setting; this brought to mind various Clive Barker stories. The bit where the guy freaks out after having sex and turns into a fang faced Incredible Hulk was one of my favorite scenes from any film ...

Re: Appluading Death Scenes

It's a weird one this applauding violence thing - I don't always feel comfortable when it kicks off even though I do it too and there is definitely something cathartic about vocally celebrating when a victim gets revenge on their oppressors. However I'm conscious of being manipulated by films that e...

Re: VIDEO NASTIES DOCUMENTARY / DISCUSSION

Absolutely the highlight of Frightfest 2010. Despite having read (and written) lots about the Video Nasties phenomenon myself previously the documentary brought all the facts and feelings together in a fresh and fascinating package - brilliantly edited, great choice of interviewees, an exceptional a...

Re: The Loved Ones

Awesome. Despite the atrocious tortures on display I found 'The Loved Ones' to be a really tender film and it had an emotional depth to it on a par with both 'Monsters' & 'Red, White & Blue'. The attention paid to the relationships between the characters made it much, much more that just a b...

Re: Buried

All through this movie I kept thinking "how's he gonna fuck a baby if he's stuck inside that box?"

Re: The Pack

Another great surprise this one; such a mess of odd elements - dirty bikers, maniac farm frau, blood guzzling mole men and Phillipe Nahon in his 'I fuck on the first date' t-shirt all added up to really fun flick. Great stuff.

Re: Dream Home

Awesomely gruesome. I couldn't help but think that the film was essentially a re-make of the 1st 15 minutes of The Toolbox Murders (the original not Tobe Hooper's 're-imagining'). Loved the blood ejaculation gag.

Re: The Tortured

Terrible. The only film I saw all weekend that I couldn't find anything positive in. The laughable dialogue made it a serious contender as this years Giallo/Mirrors. Someone I spoke to afterward quite astutely said that it appeared as if the filmmakers had shot 2 alternate endings but then included ...

Re: Monsters

Monsters was a very romantic film - the 2 central characters didn't need to escape the chaos around them so much as they needed to find each other. I don't agree with anyone who says this sort of film shouldn't be shown at an event like Frightfest; the reason I'm drawn to the horror genre is that it...

Re: Isle of Dogs

I was pleasantly surprised by Isle Of Dogs and enjoyed it much more than I expected to based on the little I had read about it in advance however it was almost as heavily indebted to giallo motifs as was Amer - I thought that using the killer's costume from Blood And Black Lace was cool but the stai...

Re: Alien vs Ninja

For a movie which describes it's entire plot in a 3 words 'Alien Vs Ninja' was totally unpredictable and awesomely entertaining; the ninjas, zombiefied by the cute pink alien parasites, all of a sudden swearing in English was hilarious. The fast-paced editing and snappy Manga-esque camera angles, th...
