Re: Thank You!

I guess the only thing to add is do we know the dates yet for next year? I would assume the same days ending on the bank holiday of Monday 31 August?

Top 5

The traditional top 5 films of the festival thread. However, I am going to cheat already (sorry!) and have four joint top 4 films in no particular order, followed by four joint fifth place movies in no particular order: Top 4: A Good Woman Is Hard To Find Halloween Party Rabid Ready Or Not Joint 5th...

Thank You!

So, the hyperreal netherworld that is Frightfest comes to an end, the best 5 days of the year over for another year. I can never manage more than a mumbled 'thank you' to Ian on the way out as I am too emotional and rubbish at goodbyes too, so I will instead express my thanks online where I am a lit...

Re: A Good Woman is Hard to Find

Another very solid film to close the fest, with a fantastic performance from Sarah Bolger in this dark, grimy gangland thriller cum family sink drama. Gripping and mostly realistic (although there are a few exceptions) the negatives are few - aside from some implausibilities the plot is largely stra...

Re: Rabid

I thought exactly the same on the final point above! I kept looking at it in the background and wondered why no-one in the film seemed to notice! That aside, it is a very decent remake, albeit quite different to the original (as far as I can recall, as it's been a while since I last saw it) and infu...

The Barge People

A low budget British horror that proudly displays its Halloween influences. The limitations of the project do show at times (e.g. variable acting and effects etc) with some of the action scenes suffering in particular (e.g. in a stabbing the knife clearly misses the victim). With the negatives out o...

The Wretched

A teen horror like the ones that get a run at the multiplexes, which is a little light on the strong stuff, but does have its moments. An element of paranoia and guessing games of whether the protagonist is going crazy or if the supernatural is real and who may or may not be possessed by the hag hel...

Re: The Black String

A nightmarish unravelling of the protagonist's life that likes to keep you guessing
Spoiler:
right up to the closing credits.
Very nicely played without going into OTT territory, but it perhaps could have been a bit creepier. 7.5 / 10

Bloodline

An intriguing psychothriller influenced by De Palma, Mann and gialli that will also appeal to fans of Dexter. I loved the soundtrack, visuals and the unapologetically graphic scenes. I enjoyed the twisting tale and the games of cat and mouse very much. 8 / 10

Re: Ready Or Not

Funnily enough I thought there were lots of comedic films this year, but little of the way of spine chillers or dread inducing movies! Anyway, onto my brief review of this film: Riotous fun with plenty of laughs and gore. Yes, the premise is absurd and there are some niggling continuity issues where...

Re: Daniel Isn't Real

I thought the same as jonbly's spoilery comment. Still, lots to like in this one, including the mythology, the battles with mental health and the last 20 minutes, but there was a spell about three quarters of the way through that for me got a little too silly and tiresome, which prevented me from fu...

Witches In The Woods

Fairly standard supernatural teen slasher. Some nice moments, but nothing you haven't seen before. Some laughs help to maintain interest between the horror scenes. 6.5 / 10

Re: Spiral

An intriguing descent into paranoia and madness, with some twists and turns along the way - some predictable, some less so. I enjoyed the full-on ending - I just wish it could have been a little longer. One of the best of the fest. 8 / 10

Volition

A twisty sci-if thriller that just about stays the right side of not being too convoluted or techy. An engrossing thriller with a noirish tinge. At one point I thought it was going to jump the shark, but it just about stays grounded enough to avoid becoming too daft. Lots of good ideas in this one. ...

Halloween Party

A blend of The Ring , Halloween and even The Collingswood Story , which mixes humour, the creepy and the freaky to great effect. The first film of the fest to set my hairs on end. A heady cocktail of a mystery that creates a very effective mythos which I would love to see more of. A cracker of a par...
