Thelma - LFF - Sun Oct 15 - Free Ticket!

My friend has had to pull out, so I have a spare ticket for this film now: www.imdb.com/title/tt6304046/

Not looking for anything for it, just a shame to let it go to waste! So if anyone in the London area is interested, send me a PM.

It's on Sunday Oct 15 at 14:30.

It (2017 Remake)

Biggest disappointment of the year so far for me. I'd been led to expect something really out there with this adaptation of Stephen King's novel, but what we actually get is a thoroughly mainstream horror movie. It's technically competent, and that's about the best thing I can say about it. The real...

Re: Overall Thoughts

I had a blast, having not been to frightfest since it left the empire, glad to see that nothing much has really changed. Although I noticed that lots of people leave as soon as the film finished, which made me feel sorry for the film makers, for me the best bit is to have that interaction with them...

Re: How come horror cinema is still 50 years behind horror literature?

Lots of nice broad generalisations there :D If anything, I generally fit into your discovery screen goer category as I do tend to seek out the weird outliers, though I'm not clear on what hipster T-shirts are - you mean the kind of horizontally striped T-shirts that seem to be ubiquitous in Shoredit...

Cult strand at LFF 2017

The London Film Festival line-up was announced yesterday; I've just been going through the Cult strand offerings and there's definitely some interesting stuff: https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/lff/Online/default.asp?BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::permalink=cult&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::context_i...

Re: Personal safety

Did any of this advice actually get used or needed? The only thing to be vigilant of were the religious preachers outside. I live here and work here...dangers are everywhere...given we are inside a cinema 80% of the time if something did happen outside we'd probably be ok. :) My thoughts exactly, b...

Re: Top Knot Detective

More of a chuckle than laugh out loud funny, but a good idea well executed. The old footage felt authentic and interviews with cast and crew reminded me of the DVD extras I've watched for many a cult Japanese film. The sub-plot which emerged elevated it above a simple spoof. 7/10

Re: The Terror of Hallow's Eve

Kind of like the first five minutes of Halloween re-imagined and stretched out to feature length. 80s homage and nice practical effects are all very well but it requires a little bit more than that to make a decent film. There's zero tension and it's not scary in the slightest. It's not even much fu...

Death Laid an Egg

In among the premieres, it's good to see something old once in a while. This is a bizarre curio of Italian genre cinema, maybe a proto-giallo, but more of a satire/thriller/not sure what the hell to call it... how to balance running a chicken farm with a sideline in prostitute slaying. The plot is a...

Less a ghost story, more a human interest story with a vaguely supernatural backdrop - not even a particularly good human interest story either; it just came across as cheesy, unconvincing and dull. The age old cliche of the helpful daemonology book which just happens to tie into exactly what the pr...

Re: Tragedy Girls

Not going to rate this one as it would reflect more on how much I hated every second of its gratingly millenial, hashtagging duration rather than the actual quality of the film-making. I didn't so much as crack a smile. Not the worst film of the festival, but certainly my worst experience. Don't ev...

Dream Demon

Another golden oldie, that was apparently billed at the time as Britain's answer to Elm Street. While that's seriously over-selling it, it's not without its charms. It actually put me more in mind of another film from the same era called Paperhouse , but like that one, it hasn't dated particularly w...

The End?

If The Bar was a great example of how to do a predominantly single location film, The End? is anything but. This one tries to find a fresh angle (literally) on the zombie apocalypse thing by having a guy trapped in a lift throughout, watching his co-workers go feral through a small gap in the lift d...

Yep, very nicely done. Just edged out of my personal top 5 by Freehold. Obviously a nod to Hitchcock as you say, and does keep you guessing, even when you think you have it sussed. 7/10
