Re: 13 Hrs

The identity of the creature wasn't surprising, but I liked the tightness of the plotting, including the "clues" of the wig and the invoice for the flat. And it was neat that a stupid prank, letting down a tyre, had triggered the whole sequence of events and revealed a family secret which had (presu...

Re: Tobe Hooper and the chainsaw massacre

Tobe Hooper has to be the worst interviewee I've seen in some time. I thought the guy conducting the interview tried his best but with the monosyllabic responses there wasn't a lot to do other than move on. Can I have my future icons a bit more chatty please? It wasn't a great interview, I agree, b...

Re: What was Eli Roth like?

He was wearing a very smart suit. For an alarming moment I thought the film was going to be introduced by John Barrowman.

Re: BEST film of Discovery Screen

Amer for me, as it was the only one I saw... and it was brilliant.

I wanted to see Christopher Roth and Burning Bright too, but couldn't get tickets.

Re: Appluading Death Scenes

I think Bedevilled was supposed to be fun, at times - the deaths of the "aunties" were definitely laced with black humour, as was the Bean Paste Incident. Having said that, there was nothing at all funny about the spousal abuse scenes or the death of the little girl. Korean movies very often have th...

Re: Buried

Quite an achievement. It maintained the tension pretty well, but given the limitations of the scenario I think they should've gone for a snappy 80 minutes rather than dragging it out to the full 90+.

If it was a big-studio film I think we would've seen a different ending!

Re: The Pack

I really wanted to like this. The elderly policeman, La Spack and her bizarre machinery (what the fuck was it for ?) gave it a hint of Jeunet & Caro. I thought the miner-zombies were pretty cool. But it was all such a terrible mess. The bikers should have been funny but were just stupidly cartoonish...

Re: The Tortured

Well made, with a reasonably interesting moral question for people to pick over. They left it for us to pick over because the film itself completely avoided the question. Revenge movies seemed to be the main theme of this year's FrightFest. In every other case, the act of revenge was either "heat o...

Re: Where are you sitting?

Does the Empire have signal blockers? I personally think all Cinemas should have them installed INSIDE the screens and not have them outside the screens. By all means text and phone people outside the screen etc but texting/Tweeting etc inside a movie is obviously a big no no. To be fair, they migh...

Re: Where are you sitting?

I'll be keeping my eye on the Heckler at the end of Row E... who seemed to spend all his time talking through The Final rather then watching. Sure it was bad but you know... every film shown deserves respect, it was picked for a reason :D Yeah, I'm in that row.... the film was utter bollocks but I'...

Nicely shot, nicely acted..... but what was it? Basically a film with all the standard zombie movie cliches...... but no zombies.

BORING!

And a terrible choice as last film of the night, something dumb and gory would've been far better.

You expect a bit more from Romero, some intelligence, some social commentary, some kind of message. The thing about trying to teach the zombies to eat something other than human flesh was stupid, what would be the point? And why bother with the "twins" subplot? Just another silly movie cliche, and i...

I thought it was great.

I liked the way they set up the "daytime safe, night-time scary" pattern at the beginning, then gradually pulled the rug out from under our feet so we never knew quite what was likely to happen. Nice job.

I thought the Q&A actually went pretty well - nowhere near the embarrassing silence that greeted Gnaw last year! But oh God, this was rubbish. It was just a jumble of silly, unrelated ideas (what the hell was the point of the Shadows?). Stupid characters, rubbish acting (Doug Bradley is NOT a "great...

Also did anyone else notice the man that became more and more Irish as the film went on? Yes indeed. It turns out almost the entire cast are British or Irish, plus a couple of non-speaking Bulgarians. For a cheapie straight-to-DVD sequel, it was fine. Shame the jokey tone of the first five minutes ...
