A tense thriller, mainly using a single room, punctuated by bursts of ultra-violence and gore. I love the guessing game of

True Fiction

A twisted ride blurring the edges of reality that asks the question - how far would you go for your art? A little implausible in places, including the naivety of the Avery character, and I would have preferred a bleaker ending, but overall I had a lot of fun with this one, including trying to second...

I'll Take Your Dead

Engrossing and with an excellent set of interactions between the three leads. Perhaps a tad predictable and I'm not sure that the supernatural elements - although they did serve some purpose - really needed to be there, as I think the story was good enough without them. A little reminiscent of We Ar...

Re: Porno

A little like the setup in Demons but with a lower budget and it's a bit more twee. There is one particularly graphic scene, as well as some good imagery in the "lost" film, which help to boost the score. I'll be a little generous with the rating as I was very tired by this point and I struggled to ...

Re: Bliss

An hallucinogenic and loud

flick. The actual plot is fairly simple, but there is a strong lead performance and plenty of good visuals, ramped up with gore as the movie progresses. Probably one to watch again to see how well it stands up to repeat viewings. 7.5 / 10

Re: Kindred Spirits

An enjoyable fun ride as each devious plot unfolds. Caitlin Stasey is as watchable as ever, while I like the dynamics of the central trio - there are some good supporting characters too. 7.5. / 10

Re: Knives and Skin

I wanted to like this more than I actually did - maybe I just didn't engage enough with any of the characters who were clearly deliberately designed to be flawed and have problems relating to others. Lots of emotional exploration around the central mystery of a missing girl, which will appeal to man...

Re: Cut Off

An enjoyable Euro mystery thriller that is implausible in places, but is very slickly made with a "ticking clock" device deployed to ensure that it unfolds at a good pace. 7.5 / 10

Re: Dark Encounter

Some suspenseful and effectively bewildering scenes and in some ways I appreciated the twist, but I felt the ending was overlong and the film was too mawkish at times. So some good elements, but overall the film didn't hang together as well as I would have liked. 6 / 10

Re: Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

I loved the impending sense of doom in this, particularly effective given the backdrop of the Vietnam War. I enjoyed the story, but some of the CGI isn't always that successful. The young leads do well, while the ending is very poignant. I loved the version of the "Season of the Witch" over the clos...

Re: Crawl

A fun romp of a creature feature. Generally predictable, but very well executed. A decent enough story for this type of movie and a good lead performance. Some of the hurricane scenes are very effective and most of the special effects are good, albeit with a few exceptions. 7.5 / 10

Re: Come to Daddy

One of those films that starts off as one type before shifting into something different. I found the tone to be a little uneven in this blend of humour, thrills and some darker elements. One kill in particular stands out. All in all, a number of positives, but I thought they didn't entirely gel toge...

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

Given there were some technical difficulties (well, I assumed that was what they were), I wonder if there will be a means of watching the shorts again? I did feel sorry for the film makers who were affected. Indeed the quality of them was so good I'm sure there will be people who will want to see th...

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

Freaks Another film with plenty of heart, revolving around a young girl (the actress is terrific) and her bizarre relationship with her father. I'm not sure about the programming of two superhero type of movies back-to-back, but fortunately it didn't really harm either. I liked the ambiguity of who...
