Re: Tragedy Girls

Hyped before the fest and before the film and it certainly delivered. I caught myself with a big cheesy grin on my face seveal times during the film and I had plenty of fun. A couple of the jokes either didn't hit the mark or were lost in translation, but now I'm being picky! The interplay between t...

Re: The Terror of Hallow's Eve

Loved the practical effects and monsters, but it felt a little horror-lite at times and I wasn't wholly sure about the ending. Nevertheless, a very good first horror movie from the director for whom this was clearly a labour of love. I'd be interested to see further exploration of the mythos and cre...

Better Watch Out

One of the best Christmas horrors ever made - plenty of humour, but with a deliciously dark, almost sadistic streak. The twist at the end of the first act is a doozy too. Credit to the young leads for carrying the plot off with aplomb. Hopefully it will be out on DVD in time for Christmas! 9 / 10

Re: Lowlife

I wasn't sure whether this would be my cup of tea, but I'm glad I watched this Tarantino-esque jigsaw of interlocking tales that was a heady blend of humour, violence and heart. It touches on various sociopolitical issues, but not in a preachy way, but certainly entertainingly. 8.5 / 10

Re: Still/Born

As Alan indicated before the film it is a very commercial horror, but it does a good job of doing what it set out to achieve. It made my hairs stand on end several times and there were some genuinely creepy moments. I enjoyed the guessing game of whether there really was a demon or if Mary was simpl...

Re: The Villainess

Not entirely what I was expecting with a much slower middle act after a blistering opening. I also found it hard to follow the storyline due to the changes between time periods and characters but maybe that was me being overtired. Overall though, the story was quite good (I think!) and some of the a...

Re: Mayhem

Another fun movie and I thought the leads were very good, while the mix of humour and action setpieces kept it ticking along after the relatively lengthy set-up at the start. Maybe it would also have benefitted from a few more humorous interludes featuring some other characters to add a little more ...

Re: Double Date

An enjoyably fun romp and Kelly Wenham's character was great! Did anyone find out where that grand house was?

One or two scenes did threaten to go on too long, but overall a very accomplished effort.
Pity there can't be a sequel, unless someone comes up with a neat idea?!

Re: InControl

One of the more contemplative offerings this year and maybe I was tired but I didn't guess the twist towards the end, although the very final twist seemed to be drawn out for no apparent reason.

Certainly very watchable for a relatively slow burner and I liked the visuals too. 8 / 10

Re: Killing Ground

A cracker - grim and gripping,
the latest Australian thriller in the post-Ivan Milat era.
I liked the merging timelines even if it did take a few scenes for me to cotton on. A few twists and turns along with a couple of deliciously brutal moments really made an impact. 8 5 / 10

Re: Game of Death

Not very profound and most of the characters are not particularly likeable either, but certainly delivered some of the best kills of the fest. Very gory, with humour mixed in, including some very random elements - what was going on with those manatees?!! Strangely had more issues with wobbly cam in ...

Victor Crowley

Adam Green's creation returned and largely triumphantly. Some spectacular kills and plenty of humour, even if it does get a bit too silly for its own good at times. Some nice tie-ins with previous instalments and also a
surprising mid-movie casualty.

Ruin Me

I liked the characters and the early interplays between them, with the humour and various horror movie references, as well as the guessing game that came into play. However, I thought the middle act was less interesting as it concluded with a fairly predictable twist. I also found the final twist wa...

Re: Jackals

I loved the opening which had plenty of action and swapped genres before settling down on one, but I agree with the comments about the characters being stupid / unlikeable, while I felt there were some missed opportunities to really make an impact e.g. the filmmakers eschewed the chance to have a me...

Boots on the Ground

For fellow motion sickness sufferers I have good news for you as I managed to get through this OK, despite the use of body / head cams. As for the film itself it maintained my interest and there were some pleasingly suspenseful sequences along with a few jump scares, although it did benefit from the...
