Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

Black Circle

Although the conclusion is no surprise it is a great journey getting there. A mystery with a terrific sense of pervasive unease and some deliciously creepy moments. A little reminiscent of the very first of

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

Here Comes Hell Many cinematic references and influences on display in this one, most notably Raimi's Evil Dead series and Drag Me To Hell. The period setting is livened up by plenty of humour, ensuring this is a fun ride with some good effects and spunky heroines when the proverbial hits the fan. ...

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

The Dead Center A better than average hospital-set horror that plays a bit like an old episode of The X-Files . I liked the clash between science and the paranormal. I couldn't really see what the purpose of the detective character was though, except perhaps to help with some of the exposition? It ...

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

Level 16 A dystopian mystery thriller with some effective suspenseful sequences. The young lead does really well to carry the film, all the more remarkable as she is portrayed as unlikeable at the start with another of the girls initially set up as the lead. It was good to see the villains rounded ...

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

And now for some brief reviews of the films - I'll do this piecemeal as I'm on the train with intermittent service. Lords of Chaos I liked the interesting dynamics between the main characters and there were several good, brutal setpieces - the fact that this is based on a true story made them even m...

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

Well said! I shall echo this by saying a big thank you to Alan, Paul, Greg and Ian (hope you're feeling better!) !

Also thank you to everyone else who helped organise the event, including the shorts, the cinema staff, the guests, the fans etc! Another super festival!

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

Yes, getting tickets for non-Frightfest Glasgow Film Festival movies was both extremely time-consuming and frustrating. I spent half an hour trying initially, then had another go later and just kept refreshing for about another half an hour before getting anywhere. I must have struck a sweet spot th...

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

1,000 films! Now that's a tremendous achievement!

I would also add that this year's ticket buying process for Glasgow was super smooth too!

Re: Halloween 2018

My top 3 of the fest:
1) The Unthinkable
2) Peripheral
3) Abrakadabra

Although I would say that there really wasn't a lot between 3rd to 6th as the standard was pretty consistent.

Re: Halloween 2018

Abrakadabra I liked a lot about this neo-giallo, including the magic backdrop, the attention to detail of the period setting, much of the story and some of the kills. It could have perhaps benefitted from one or two more setpiece death sequences and I was really not sure about the ending, which was...

Re: Halloween 2018

The Unthinkable Reminiscent of another great Nordic feature from a few years ago, "What We Become", and again this is very well done. Maybe a little bit too much family drama in places, but perhaps that helps to anchor the rest of the plot as well as to appreciate the characters. Suitably unnerving...

Re: Halloween 2018

Peripheral
When Paul Hyett said in the intro that it was a "woman in a flat" movie I groaned as that sounded unappealing but I really enjoyed this one. A nice blend of near-future technology with sociopolitical comment along with the perils of being a writer. 8 / 10

Re: Halloween 2018

Mara An intriguing sleep paralysis-based movie with J-horror influences. I liked the guessing game of whether the story would go down a scientific or a supernatural solution, even if the answer wasn't a big surprise. There were some pleasingly tense moments, but I just didn't find Mara herself to b...

Re: Halloween 2018

Parallel
A wish-fulfilment fantasy that is not the most original, but is well-executed. A few twists and turns help to keep this one interesting. 7 / 10

Re: Halloween 2018

Reborn Hammy and hokey in places and sometimes felt like an overwrought melodrama at times, but quite entertaining with some decent kills. The latest 1980s throwback in many ways, even if it was meant to be set in the present day, in terms of casting, style and even the type of plot, which was not ...
