Re: BEST film of DAY 5

The best day of the fest for me, really not sure which to go for, but The Last Exorcism just pips Video Nasties.

Re: Buried

*** Spoilers *** Did very well given there is only one setting and only one character ever on screen. It maintained my interest and had a good claustrophobic feel, while it was nice to see that there was no cosy, contrived ending. A few things about it did seem a little unrealistic though, so only 8...

Re: The Loved Ones

I had no problem with the ending, just sad that Mia had lost both her brother and her dad! Certainly well worth staying up for this little gem, a great combination of humour, cringe-inducing moments and with plenty of charm. One of the best of the fest. 8.5 / 10

Re: Damned By Dawn

Sadly a long way short of the Evil Dead 1 and 2, with little splatter, little fun and poor effects. Strangely, the film opened so promisingly, but went downhill after the first half hour especially as the effects were about as scary as the Alton Towers Haunted House ride! There were some tense seque...

Re: We Are What We Are

Sadly lacked the stunning cinematography and emotional impact of Let The Right One In, but nevertheless an engrossing tale of a family trying to survive. Agree with the above comments regarding the mythos not being explained in this one (what the ritual was, why they would die if they didn't eat hum...

Re: The Pack

Entertaining and quirky Gallic horror with some bizarre characters and a sense of humour. Loved the female lead, while La Spack was a good villainess. Good fun way to start the day. 7.5 / 10

Re: Dream Home

Humorous and topical splatter fest set against the backdrop of the Hong kong housing market. Some inventive and gory deaths, with a twist in the tale. I found the female perspective on Hong Kong men amusing, although the film obviously wasn't very realistic in places and some of the effects were ver...

Re: Monsters

Thoughtful, evocative tale with various political and social sub-texts set against a backdrop of alien invasion and the resulting infected zone where the aliens are kept segregated from the US. An emotional, very well told story with excellent use of locations. However, it will disappoint those expe...

Very good update, although lacking the griminess, seediness and graphic scenes of the original. Still, in some ways I felt it surpassed the original, and there were some inventive deaths and a fair degree of resonance in the film. Loved the fish hooks! 8 / 10

Re: 13 Hrs

*** Spoilers *** Unfortunately I knew this was a werewolf movie before seeing it, while I guessed it was the mum early on. Still, kudos for the twists nevertheless. Some ropey acting and dialogue and poor decision-making by the characters hampered this one. But, werewolves in a house and Isabella Ca...

Re: The Tortured

Some may label this as torture prawn, but it could have been so much more graphic. There were some interesting dilemmas presented throughout the movie and I liked how one of the couple kept getting cold feet about what they were doing at different points, while the other wanted to keep going. The on...

Re: Cherry Tree Lane

Another topical film, with a look at modern-day "broken Britain". I liked the realism and the open ending was effective, while there was a fair amount of humour to be found in this one too. However, the middle act started to drag a little, while gorehounds will be disappointed as it was comparativel...

Re: Red Hill

A solid take on the Western, with a modern Australian setting. I liked the morality underpinning the film, but it was a little unrealistic at times (e.g. caracters failing to make the most of their opportunities to shoot the escaped convict) and there was some very corny dialogue. Nevertheless, reas...

Re: F

Topical with an involving plot and some tense sequences. It would be interesting to see an alternative version with more of the violence on-screen to see how that would play. Just about the best film of the day. 8 / 10
