Re: Dark Encounter

Some suspenseful and effectively bewildering scenes and in some ways I appreciated the twist, but I felt the ending was overlong and the film was too mawkish at times. So some good elements, but overall the film didn't hang together as well as I would have liked. 6 / 10

Re: Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

I loved the impending sense of doom in this, particularly effective given the backdrop of the Vietnam War. I enjoyed the story, but some of the CGI isn't always that successful. The young leads do well, while the ending is very poignant. I loved the version of the "Season of the Witch" over the clos...

Re: Crawl

A fun romp of a creature feature. Generally predictable, but very well executed. A decent enough story for this type of movie and a good lead performance. Some of the hurricane scenes are very effective and most of the special effects are good, albeit with a few exceptions. 7.5 / 10

Re: Come to Daddy

One of those films that starts off as one type before shifting into something different. I found the tone to be a little uneven in this blend of humour, thrills and some darker elements. One kill in particular stands out. All in all, a number of positives, but I thought they didn't entirely gel toge...

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

Given there were some technical difficulties (well, I assumed that was what they were), I wonder if there will be a means of watching the shorts again? I did feel sorry for the film makers who were affected. Indeed the quality of them was so good I'm sure there will be people who will want to see th...

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

Freaks Another film with plenty of heart, revolving around a young girl (the actress is terrific) and her bizarre relationship with her father. I'm not sure about the programming of two superhero type of movies back-to-back, but fortunately it didn't really harm either. I liked the ambiguity of who...

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

The Witch, Part I: The Subversion More of a superhero origin flick than a horror, but there is no shortage of gore. After a blood-splattered opening it changes into a teen movie with heart, before shifting gears to the violent, action-filled second half, including a rug-pulling reveal that our hero...

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

Finale A good old-fashioned stalk and torture flick that didn't really live up to its confrontational billing beforehand but nevertheless had some suitably horrific moments. The latest in a long line to have an absurdist, "comic" villain and I'm still yet to be convinced this really works in this t...

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

Automata

A bit of a Gothic curio this one. I loved the mythology and the Infernal Princess herself but at times it seems a bit like a children's programme from 30 years ago, albeit one with some very uncomfortable sexualised scenes! 7 / 10

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

The Rusalka

A limited amount of horror sequences in this one, but it is a very well told tale of love and loss. I'm not sure about the name change to The Siren though when there are already a number of horror films released with that title - I thought the original name stood out more. 7.5 / 10

Black Circle

Although the conclusion is no surprise it is a great journey getting there. A mystery with a terrific sense of pervasive unease and some deliciously creepy moments. A little reminiscent of the very first of

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

Here Comes Hell Many cinematic references and influences on display in this one, most notably Raimi's Evil Dead series and Drag Me To Hell. The period setting is livened up by plenty of humour, ensuring this is a fun ride with some good effects and spunky heroines when the proverbial hits the fan. ...

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

The Dead Center A better than average hospital-set horror that plays a bit like an old episode of The X-Files . I liked the clash between science and the paranormal. I couldn't really see what the purpose of the detective character was though, except perhaps to help with some of the exposition? It ...

Re: FrightFest Glasgow 2019 (Glasgow Film Festival)

Level 16 A dystopian mystery thriller with some effective suspenseful sequences. The young lead does really well to carry the film, all the more remarkable as she is portrayed as unlikeable at the start with another of the girls initially set up as the lead. It was good to see the villains rounded ...
