Re: Quality of films this year

I mean, seriously, Shockwave Darkside - who in their right mind would watch that and think "this would be great at our film festival!"? As I mentioned in another thread (may have been this one), Shockwave Darkside was the same production company as Banshee Chapter. The latter had its world premiere...

Re: Best and Worst Films of 2016

I'm also not sure that people were laughing because Missi Pyle was in her undies and forced to take a shower. That in itself is not funny. But in a comedy movie where its played for dark humour, the sheer madness and insanity of the scene in front of you can spark nervous laughter. Black comedy isn...

Re: Quality of films this year

I wonder if we'll eventually gravitate towards a system more like the London Film Festival, with no "Main" or "Discovery" screens but with a number of films showing simultaneously, and you'd just pick (in advance?) what you wanted to see. Regardless of if it changes, I'll be doing a lot more resear...

Re: Quality of films this year

I didn't like other films like Mercy and Abattoir, but I know some people did, so I accept tastes can differ, however Cell, Blood Feat and Downhill were hated by pretty much everyone, and I really can't believe these films were selected because they were genuniely regarded as films that the organis...

Wasn't something announced as being already acquired by FF Presents?

Re: Beyond the Gates

I enjoyed its funky 80s aesthetic (which is going to start to become a horror trope in itself if filmmakers don't start looking for another hook), and it had some great gore gags, but I couldn't help thinking it seemed stretched out somewhat. I mean, they were playing this evil Jumanji game to save ...

Re: No more phone warnings?

Then I realised there hadn't been a single Turn Your Bloody Phone off advert before the films. Neither was there good old Ian shouting "And turn your f&@king phones off!" as the lights dimmed. They played the standard Vue "Boo!" audio warning before a few films and there was James Moran's ident bef...

Re: Did anyone else feel that the film descriptions in the guide are often misleading?

I think the descriptions of the films are written by someone at Frightfest, as they never match the official marketing hyperbole. That said, there still has to be an element of marketing in the descriptions (especially true of Discovery titles) to encourage people to see them.

Thoughts on Frightfest 2016

So I'll start by saying I spent all of my time in the Main Screen, except for dipping out for the Women in Horror Panel. I thought this year was a good year, nothing I really disliked intensely, probably Abbatoir and Director's Cut were my least favourite films, but I didn't despise them like I have...

Re: The Windmill Massacre

A by-the-numbers slasher movie with some great kills. I thought they missed a trick by having a huge audio score as someone was dying (especially that first kill) which would have drowned out any cheers from the crowd. Would have gone down well as a last of the night movie I think, but a nice way to...

Downhill mountain bikes, not BMXs. Please.

Batshit bonkers, still don't know if I liked it or not but it was certainly different from the usual formulaic stuff we get as horror fans.

Re: Sadako vs Kayako

I honestly don't think it's intended as comedy - only because generally Japanese movies don't do subtle comedy it tends to have to be over the top and goofy for audiences to pick up that they're supposed to laugh (not that they're stupid, cultural differences I believe). To a western audience the po...
