Re: Movies For August 2017 Fest

No postcards from Cannes this year, but I've done a round-up of some of the films doing the rounds at Cannes and Tribeca that haven't been mentioned above: THE BIG HITTERS The Killing of a Sacred Deer - Yorgos Lanthimos' latest, starring Colin Farrell as a heart surgeon who befriends a sinister teen...

Re: Movies For August 2017 Fest

I have now seen SAFE NEIGHBOURHOOD at the Brussels Fantastic Film Festival and can confirm it is excellent. It's also difficult to describe in detail without spoiling a lot of its surprises, so try to avoid reviews and trailers. I also saw NAILS and TONIGHT SHE COMES , both of which are unexceptiona...

Re: Discovery Screen Tickets

Empire's website gives screens 4 and 5 as having 96 and 48 seats respectively. Last year, at the Shepherd's Bush Vue, each of the three discovery screens had at least 200 seats, and even then passholder tickets for a few of the discovery films went within minutes. I hope the Short Films Showcases re...

Re: Movies For August 2017 Fest

The BFI have posted Sight & Sound's round-up of the best films of the SXSW festival . A couple look like they would fit in well at Frightfest: M.F.A. (Natalia Leite) - "A raped art student tracks down those who committed similar attacks on her friends and classmates, then despatches them with clumsy...

Re: Movies For August 2017 Fest

Films I'd be the most excited about: THE LIMEHOUSE GOLEM (Juan Carlos Medina) - This has to be one of the most likely to play. It got a lot of positive reviews when it played at TIFF, Medina's film Painless played at the 2013 Frightfest, the screenwriter Jane Goldman attends Frightfest as an audienc...

Re: Glasgow Suggestions

Out of the 3 options (lanyard, wristband and stamp) I think the least worst option is the lanyard, so hopefully they'll be used when we return to the Empire! The wristbands were the one-use-only type, and I wasn't going to sleep in mine, so I pulled it off on Friday night and carried it around in m...

Re: 2017 Venue

Exciting news. Raises the prospect of the old Frightfest mass audience feel that I've missed these past three years. This is the new Empire Auditorium information from their website: IMAX Screen 727 Luxury Seats 6 Wheelchair Spaces Impact Screen 277 Luxury Seats 99 Balcony Seats 22 Bean Bags (No Whe...

Re: Films For Glasgow 2017

In order of my excitement from most to least: SHIN GODZILLA - I love the Godzilla films and everybody who's seen this says it's one of the best A CURE FOR WELLNESS - Gore Verbinski's The Ring was a rare good remake and he can definitely handle creepiness well DETOUR - I've liked all of Chris Smith's...

Re: Exciting genre flicks arriving in 2017

I always like these posts for highlighting films that weren't on my radar. I hadn't heard of Kuso, but it looks insane. I hope one or two of these can play at this August's Frightfest.

Re: Films For Glasgow 2017

KARMA / ARBAT / ARPATTI - A Buddhist-themed horror about a monk who falls in love with a village girl while dark secrets of the temple begin to manifest. It was banned in Thailand due to shocking scenes of a monk kissing a girl and touching a Buddha's head, however it got unbanned after three minut...

Re: Films For Glasgow 2017

Four that I think have the biggest chance: HERETIKS - Paul Hyett's Jacobean horror about woman taken to repent in a sinister monastery. They showed a clip of this at Glasgow Frightfest last year. SKYSHARKS - Zombies on flying sharks. DETOUR - Dark noir from Chris Smith. The Frightfest guys loved it,...

Re: Halloween

From best to worst IMO: Headshot definitely the best of the day: good action, no glaring faults, storyline OK. It was very much in the shadow of The Raid , though the use of long takes and inventive cinematography for the action scenes is much better than fight scenes appear in Hollywood blockbuster...

Re: Films for Halloween All-dayer?

The Halloween event is always the left-overs after all the other festivals have come and gone, but it looks like a big improvement on last year, with two high-profile films from good directors with Headshot and Rupture . Don't Hang Up is the first feature from the pair who directed the well-made Red...

Re: Films for Halloween All-dayer?

Anything you are hoping for? Couldn't see a thread or new sub-section for it so thought I'd start one. Wouldn't mind Takeshi Miike's AS THE GODS WILL or Kiyoshi Kurosawa's CREEPY. Creepy is on at the London Film Festival so I don't think it will play again. Ones that could play: I AM A HERO - Japan...

Re: Quality of films this year

The gold standard should be 2008 which included Eden Lake , Time Crimes , Mum & Dad , The Chaser , Let the Right One In and Martyrs . Gosh yes, that was a good year! Although I'm sure there was some dross as well if I could be bothered to look it up.... what year was Bubba's Chili Parlor ? Yep, tha...
