I had to walk out and film ruined my festival.
I don't get it - why would one bad film experience ruin your festival? I didn't catch this one myself, but doesn't sound like I missed much from the reviews I've read.

Re: Top Five FF17 Films

Top 5: 1. Mayhem 2. The Bar 3. Lowlife 4. Replace 5. Freehold Bottom 5: 1. Tragedy Girls 2. Psychopaths 3. Boots on the Ground 4. The Terror of Hallow's Eve 5. Diane I'm with Wolfshade (but apparently no-one else) on Tragedy Girls. Hated it. Objectively speaking though, Psychopaths was a worse film.

Replace

Body horror about a girl with a skin condition. To say shades of Cronenberg would be a massive understatement, but this one just about holds its own. As an allegory of society's obsession with youth and beauty, it works pretty well, despite a few dubious plot turns. It's very nicely shot and the all...

Devil's Gate

The X-Files for dummies, with fake Scully leading the investigation. This alien invasion story is so full of cliches, it's straining at the seams; absolutely nothing you haven't seen a hundred times before. The effects are actually OK, but the script... wow. One choice quote: "my grandfather us...

Dhogs

A film where the audience is implicated in the act of viewing. Haneke-lite. Some clever ideas, but it doesn't quite pull it off for me. It lacks the subtlety of something like Cache, and feels too disjointed (though in fairness, there is a good reason for this.) 6/10

Re: Tragedy Girls

Not going to rate this one as it would reflect more on how much I hated every second of its gratingly millenial, hashtagging duration rather than the actual quality of the film-making. I didn't so much as crack a smile. Not the worst film of the festival, but certainly my worst experience.

Re: Lowlife

Featuring a host of bizarre characters, smart writing and a great soundtrack, the film is split into overlapping segments. Confusion reigns in the first segment, but as pieces start falling into place, you find yourself wanting to go along for the ride. One of the standouts of the festival for me. 8...

Re: Killing Ground

This is the one film I really regret not seeing on the main screen. Sounds really good from what everyone's saying. I went to see Devil's Gate instead, which definitely wasn't worth it.

Re: The Bar

A virtually single location location film where a bunch of strangers are holed up together in a bar in central Madrid after some strange events force them to accept that leaving the bar might not be such a hot idea. The brilliant title sequence, of microscopic ticks and worms shot in macro, sets up ...

I can only think some seats are directly under an air vent then or I'm particularly prone to feeling the cold because it was freezing in there most of the time.

Re: Mayhem

For anyone who's ever wanted to set fire to their office and dance in the ashes (which is probably anyone who's worked in an office environment, at one time or another), this film delivers. Think Office Space meets The Raid . Perfectly cast, funny and cathartic. Steven Yeun was a great choice for th...

Re: Victor Crowley

I'm not a huge fan of the Hatchet franchise, but the latest surprise installment was the most enjoyable to date - a few laughs, plenty of gore and some great death set pieces. Probably my favourite opening scene of the festival too. 7/10

Re: Boots on the Ground

I had high hopes for this one so it came as a big disappointment to discover it was just another in a long line of found footage movie with dark corridors lit by strobing flashlights and entities jumping out at the screen like cheap carnival tricks, turning the picture to static. There's not really ...

Re: Our Evil

Impressive debut feature from Brazilian director Samuel Gelli. It's a little bit on the spiritual side for my liking and I did see one of the twists coming, but all in all, it's a well constructed, well realized film especially for the budget - which the director revealed was about $100k in the Q&am...

Re: Dead Shack

I wasn't sold on this one. For me, the writing and delivery fell largely flat. The funniest character by far was drunk Dad, but he spends over half the film unconscious, locked in a cupboard under the stairs. 4/10
