Re: Scherzo Diabolico
I've liked most of Bogliano's other films, but this felt like a massive step backwards from Late Phases for me. The whole thing felt really amateurish, and the kidnap plot to get the top job was contrived and deeply stupid. Where did he suddenly get all this money from to get expensive apartments, m...

Re: Inner Demon
It started off ok and the heroine was pretty smart and plucky, but as soon as she got stuck in the (enormous) wardrobe all of that drained down to nothing and I found it increasingly irritating. At the point where our main baddie went to dispose of Wayne and the wife was having a shower she could ha...

Re: 2014 All nighter
I agree this year was a reasonably strong line up, there wasn't anything approaching Umbrage/Watermen/Bad Meat levels of badness this year. Extraterrestrial wasn't bad, but didn't do much different. Enjoyed ABC's of Death 2 quite a bit and it was perfect for the all nighter as it kept me awake due t...

Re: The Dead 2: India
As others have said, basically a retread of the first film in a different locale with a different (poorly written) character motivation. Very repetitive, find car, lose car, find bike, lose bike, get attacked, wander round in the dark a bit, intercut with the comic relief bickering family in Mumbai....

Re: Odd Thomas
Thought this was ok, but as usual Sommers can't resist overdoing everything to the nth degree - slow mo, speed ramping, incredibly loud sound, multiple flashbacks to explain every single plot point we might possibly have failed to understand with shitty CGI editing to bring us back to the present. A...
Re: Haunter
I knew right from the beginning that I was going to love this, and finding the little door behind the tumble dryer just nailed it for me. By itself the concept of ghosts of a serial killer coming back to exact their revenge is completely unoriginal, but it was all in the execution. Beautifully shot,...

Re: Frankenstein's Army
I found this utterly hateful from start to finish, creature designs excepted. The stupid decision to go the found footage route made it exhausting to watch, and the incessant camera cuts and restarts, falling into ditches and so on must have added 20 minutes to the running time. I couldn't count the...

Re: The Dark Tourist
Some of the stuff that Cudlitz explained in the Q&A about character motivations, and said had been taken out, needed to be in the film. It makes sense that Melanie Griffith throws him off the rails and makes him slip up, but for me there was nothing in the film to lead me to that conclusion if h...

Re: Dark Touch
Fairly dismal all round, with laughable performances, and an ill thought through confused story. The couple she went to live with were utterly dim and the doll party was ridiculous. The film couldn't decide whether Niamh was in control of her powers or not (one minute she wasn't, the next she could ...

Re: Fright Night - 3D
Dreadful I honestly thought there were some reels missing at the beginning. Nothing happened (except endless shitty dialogue) for half an hour then out of the blue Evil Ed tells Charlie that his neighbour is a vampire, is converted 2 minutes later then vanishes for an hour. Systematically and pointl...

Re: The Wicker Tree
It felt like Jilly Cooper's Riders with a bit of paganism thrown in. TV production values, an ill thought through plot, cod performances and bumbling characters who weren't especially funny, generally underwhelming. I guess it proves you can't trap lightning in a bottle twice. The Queen of the May s...

Some of my favourites: The Abominable Dr Phibes - Nurse Allen is covered in a sticky substance then consumed by Locusts Theatre of Blood - Meredith Merridew (Robert Morley) chokes to death by having his 'babies' baked in a pie rammed down a funnel into his throat Videodrome - Harlan has his hand tra...

It was like an over-long Evanescence video directed by Guy Maddin (on a really, really bad day). But with terrible singing. Exactly ! It's a cold day in hell when you can legitimately say that the best things about a film were Sarah Brightman and Paris Hilton. I was finding the film quite irritatin...

An interesting idea with a plot shot full of holes, and it went on far too long. Why didn't they just bump the 2 blokes off straight away and then tie the girls up ? Why keep up the pretence (other than to drag the film out) The bit where he chained the accomplice and Seth together to search the lug...
