I have to say I thought the gorier bits seemed not to fit with the general tone of the film anyway.

Class divides, Daily Mail backlashes, whatever... Eden Lake is utterly uncomfortably brilliant. I just hope Watkins hasn't peaked with his first film. I personally just enjoyed the severity of it and the fact there was no let up in the aggression That's what made it boring for me (at least for most of the middle part of the film)... but a film must have some value if it provokes so many different reactions and responses. Here's a thing. Someone who saw another screening said that the author and director said in Q&A that Eli was a girl. Maybe they were talking about the actress ? He did say quite clearly at Frightfest that the character Eli is actually a boy. Not that it matters much - I'd say "vampire"...

But, thinking about it the following morning, it did occur to me that my verdict would probably have been very different if, say, the cast were Korean and the lovingly-shot cityscapes had been Seoul. I'm fairly sure I would have attributed the apparent lack of logic, plot and motivation to the cult...
