Re: Among the Living

A coming of age cum modern day fairytale. At times it felt a little horror-lite (e.g. the off-screen kills) but at other times there was plenty of gore on show. Both sides of the story were a tragedy too, which add to the drama. Overall I enjoyed this, but if it had been a little better still it cou...

Re: The Babadook

Ultimately didn't quite live up to the hype, but an effective chiller nevertheless, making my hairs on the back of my neck stand up a few times. However, I did lose sympathy for both of the main characters, but maybe I'm just not a very forgiving person?! 8 / 10

Re: Coherence

Profound, thought provoking and mind-bending. An intriguing yarn with interesting characters. Perhaps not for those who prefer faster paced fare, while it will be interesting to see how well it stands up to repeat viewings. Still, I thought it was a fiendish puzzler that kept me thinking - and how m...

Re: The Mirror

Effectively chilling supernatural found footage flick that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up on several occasions. Also good to see a film of this sub-genre not rely too much on jump scares but instead focus on suspense. The humour and characters also kept the film interesting during th...

Re: Starry Eyes

A superb little shocker that reminded me of classic Argento at times - surprisingly he wasn't quoted as one of the influences. A film that stays with you. A classic Faustian tale set in Hollywood with sufficient mystery remaining at the end to allow for a sequel. The lead was good value, the plot wa...

Re: The Harvest

Well made and generally well acted, especially by the young leads (I didn't realise until afterwards that the girl next door was in The Possession too) in this fable-inspired slow-burner. Perhaps the film lacks a big set-piece at the end, but maybe it doesn't need one as the story is well told and s...

Re: All Cheerleaders Die

Fun and occasionally effective teen horror that benefitted from a few interesting characters. A little reminiscent of Lucky McKee's earlier effort May. If you don't expect anything too profound then you may find this a reasonably entertaining time-passer. 7 / 10

The Drownsman

Apologies if I am duplicating a topic, although I couldn't see one for this film. Seemingly attempts to create a new horror franchise villain, although I think the makers will struggle to attract the fanbase needed for a sequel to be green lit, but we shall see. This movie has some new ideas, but th...

Re: Housebound

Good fun with an effective blend of humour, scares and suspense. It works because of the characterisation and charm. Well worth seeking out. 8 / 10

***Spoilers***

I liked how it effortlessly transformed from a haunted house to a mystery to a certain X-Files episode to a killer in the house movie.

Re: Dead Snow 2

Crowd-pleasing fun with plenty of gags and action / gore set-pieces. I thought the American characters were not as bad as I first feared, but maybe I'm alone in this?! 7.5 / 10

Re: The Green Inferno

Thanks for clearing that up about Samantha - I did wonder what that was in the bowls that was so horrifying, so now that makes far more sense!

Re: The Green Inferno

Pales in comparison to "Cannibal Holocaust" but an entertaining film in its own right. More humour than the aforementioned classic, and less shocking, but there are a number of squirmy and gory sequences. 8/ 10 ***Spoilers*** I did feel the movie missed a trick at the end as Samantha could...

Re: Late Phases

A profound, contemplative movie with good performances from a largely veteran cast. Some good practical effects, although some don't work so well, but still preferable to overused and cartoonish CGI. 7.5 / 10

Re: Honeymoon

An unsettling tale that riffs on established tropes whilst maintaining a beguiling air of mystery.
7.5 / 10

***Spoiler***

My only quibble is the lack of explanation behind it all, but the parasitical body horror element is reminiscent of early Cronenberg.

Re: Zombeavers

Fun and as mentioned with the order of deaths not always predictable. Seen better, seen worse comedy horrors. Note: the cast / crew details in the programme were wrong, presumably copied in from You're Next?! 7 / 10
