Re: Frightfest: Beneath the Dark Heart of Cinema
2012 was also the year of the Tulpa screening, which the documentary has a significant amount about. While that was fun for the audience it must have been embarrassing for the organisers (especially Alan, who championed the film) to have to deal with the cast and crew after that, large numbers of wh...

Re: Frightfest: Beneath the Dark Heart of Cinema
For those of us who didn't see the doc, dare we ask what was going on in 2012? Looking back at the line-up there were some good films on that year, so presumably it was more of a behind the scenes kind of thing... I think the gist of it was, the festival was getting bigger and bigger, and their rol...

Dead Night
Whatever they were going for in this it didn't work. There's a standard set-up about a family going out to a cabin in the woods to be butchered, then a meta-narrative that is a crime show talking about the events, and that somehow ties into a story that people are getting possessed there are witches...

Re: Book of Monsters
I enjoyed this quite a bit, as it gave me exactly what I was hoping for: low-budget monster-packed fun full of practical effects. I wish something fun and colourful like this could have been on the main screen to shake things up rather than one of the numerous dimly-lit slow-burn horrors. The limita...

Re: The Man Who Killed Hitler and then The Bigfoot
There is a lot to like about this movie: Sam Elliott is fantastic in it, giving possibly the best performance I saw at the festival, and Aidan Turner is good too though his screen time turned out to be surprisingly limited. The score is also very good as well. I'm pleased the composer was there to p...

Re: He's Out There
Not much to say about this one other than it was an especially generic home invasion movie and it looked like every frame had been run through a Instagram filter to make it look extra dark and brown. Yvonne Strahovski deserves better roles than this.
Re: Heretiks
The worst film I saw at this year's festival, made even more disappointing because the period setting and promise of demonic nuns seemed exciting. Bad cinematography of people shuffling in darkened rooms, bad writing that rarely captured a period-appropriate tone and gave us a repetitious and confus...

Re: What happen to the hygiene guy?
But how difficult is it to go back to his hotel or hostel room, have a shower and change clothes? He can't be paying £200 for a Frightfest pass and be sleeping on the streets, right?

Re: Frightfest Awards
The trouble with having audience voting is that the audience won't have seen every film, whereas people on the organising team have. I can't say for sure, but I would put money on not one of the organising team having seen every film. Some films (e.g. this year's The Golem ) are not even completed ...

Re: Frightfest Awards
I've never liked how Total Film are able to imply that their awards are "official" in some way, especially when they never explain what how the awards were chosen: I assume it's just the opinion of the Total Film journalist who writes the article, although back when Total Film sponsored a ...

Re: What Keeps You Alive
This one was almost good; interesting character study of a psychopath, but seemed to overplay its hand with a lot of false endings and twists. I'm still not quite sure how good I thought it was, but I think it was around average quality for the weekend. The best thing about this was the acting. Brit...

Frightfest: Beneath the Dark Heart of Cinema
I really enoyed seeing this with the Frightfest crowd. It's a pity they couldn't get some bigger names to interview like Guillermo del Toro, Edgar Wright or any of the big name stars, celebrities and directors who have attended the festival over the years. Adam Green and Joe Lynch are pretty much th...

Re: Anna and the Apocalypse
Horror-comedy-musicals are a classic form perhaps because there's such a disparate array of elements that need to be got right, resulting in a lot of risk but big rewards if everything goes right. Anna and the Apocalypse is far too uneven to match up to the greats of the genre like Rocky Horror Pict...
Re: Upgrade
One of the best films of the festival for me. William Gibson, the father of cyberpunk, has never had his genre-defining works successfully transfer to the big screen, but this film felt like the best William Gibson adaptation that he never wrote, as it closely resembles his world and themes. Excelle...

Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires
I remember enjoying the short film version a lot when it screened at Frightfest some years back, but extending it to feature length didn't work for me. I think I could best describe it to someone as what you'd expect to get if Roy Chubby Brown was handed directorial control of an Aardman animations ...
