Re: films we just saw

And yet, the judge's mobile phone scene and the steak bone scene. It's like there was a different, far better picture they decided to splice in at random points. Then it turned into Fletch Goes Rogue. Shame. But, it did quite well, didn't it? Perhap there'll be a glut of better revenge movies coming...

Re: films we just saw

There's a terrific interview with Thelma Schoonmaker (can't or the life of me remember where it is, frustratingly) where she talks about that opening sequence of Shutter Island and how Scorsese's use of music is deliberately subjective and heightened to mirror Teddy's mental state as he approaches t...

Re: films we just saw

Law Abiding Citizen - really wanted this to be a fun slice of morally bankrupt revenge nonsense, but it was just really stupid. This is to Cape Fear as Deep Blue Sea is to Jaws . Well, it nearly is, parts of it are, but it doesn't quite cut it. I can't tell you how much I wanted the villain to be a...

Re: films we just saw

Catacombs This made me scream, not in fear, certainly not in horror but in a way that implied for f*cks sake will something just happen in this film. Pink should stick to singing. The rest of the cast I don't care about and poor Victoria, what was so bad that she had to be hauled over to Paris, to ...

Oui, oui. I doubt we'll see a better horror picture this year. But let's not hype it up, eh!?

Re: films we just saw

Nice cameo by American Movie's Mark Borchardt as well.

The animations reminded most of Grease.

There's a far, far better prom night horror (with a very similar overweight comedy-relief-best-friend character, bizarrely) coming later this year though.

Dumplings This has been sat on my sky+ for ages so I thought i'd give it a go, thankfully prior to having my lunch! Far from being a horror, what it does do is create a story so f*cked up and disturbing that the storyline itself will scare you anyway. Nasty, grim, gruesome, sickening, stomach churn...

Re: films we just saw

This weekend end was a recapitulation of teenage years spent lurking in the aisles of the local independent video store:

Avenging Force
Out For Justice
Maniac Cop
Roadhouse

which, quite unexpectedly, ended up being finely sequenced run of 80s era facism-for-fun.

Re: films we just saw

Vague spoilers for deeply generic genre film structure: My issue with Vacancy was that it's the most perfunctory pictures I've ever seen. After a sharp, character-led set up -- the whole thing is nicely played by a rather bemused Luke Wilson and Kate Beckensale -- things just...happen. Couple is cau...

I don't...there's always Vincent Price. Different -- hugely different -- class of wit, granted, but there's a huge precedent from EC to Amicus and beyond.

It was the most apposite for Amer, though. Just glad it's coming put in the UK at all, to be honest.

Hmmmm....a big screen Giallo Day with Alan Jones. If this country had a New Beverly....

Most of the dialogue Christopher Connelly recites in Manhattan Baby is comedy gold, too.

Re: A LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN

Now let's hope Alan, Helen and Optimum can find a way to sneak Don't Torture A Duckling to a future Frightfest line-up with its even more amazing (if shorter) Florinda Bolkan performance. "That" sequence in the graveyard would be stunning on the big screen. I miss those retro screenings on...
