"Stunning, Exciting...Intensely Thrilling". That's what it says on the posters for The Guardian , and the quote and the attendant five stars come from no less than Alan Jones. In fact, if hadn't been for that poster quote I'd probably have avoided The Guardian altogether, and that really m...

The Departed. This is great, it's my film of the year so far. Two and a half hours long and my interest never wavered; it's way better than the last two Scorsese movies Gangs of New York (DiCaprio still looked like he was about 14) and The Aviator. Even the invariably horrible Mark "Stumpy&quo...

World Trade Center . I have to say I was disappointed. I generally like Stone's movies; I enjoy the overblown bombastic approach of JFK (a personal favourite) and the underrated Nixon and, though I hated it at the time, I'm even coming around slightly to Natural Born Killers. Even Any Given Sunday,...

Last night: to Northampton! And only just getting there by the skin of my teeth (memo to truck drivers - you can drive at more than 37mph on the open highway), squeezed into The Sentinel , just catching the 20th Century Fox logo but missing the BBFC certificate so I was unable to sotto voce "12...

Yes, these are just previews. It's coming out properly on November 3rd.

I'm also wishing to Cthulhu's mighty fist that the Jarvis Cocker's rather catchy end credits song "Running The World" gets nominated for an award in the coming season. Performing "It's Hard Out there For A Pimp" is one thing, but try getting Cocker's chorus of multiple "cnu...

Yes, Children of Men is pretty bleak and horrifying. But it's so incredibly well done. The two principal "action sequences" (though that term cheapens them) are stunning, apparently shot in single takes and yet there's no way they could have been. As for whether this might be the way this ...

Talladega Nights - well, I was feeling a bit miserable yesterday evening and needed cheering up. This didn't do the trick overall, though there were a few funny moments. But (as Mark Kermode was opining on his Radio 5Live film review slot last week) is that enough? By a strict laughs/smiles per min...

BLACK DAHLIA's not too bad. I rather liked it. It's not De Palma at his OTT best but there are some lovely moments and shots that couldn't be anyone but him. It's more straight noir than straight de Palma, but (I wish he'd do another Hitch hommage and go bananas with it like with RAISING CAIN, and g...

Just got back from Crank. Quite entertaining, with a nice pair of central characters and some extremely funny moments, but I don't like this hyper-hyper You-Will-Be-Excited editing; for me it tends to have the opposite effect.

Seeing Right At Your Door cost me nowt as I have a UGC card (gloat, gloat, and sorry to those who haven't got them). :) Yikes, but this is a grim one. I knew going in it wasn't going to be big on laughs, though. I'd have liked less of the annoying ambient soundtrack music (no music at all would have...

PULSE (US version). Actually I didn't think it was that bad. No classic, but interesting. Shot in that needlessly dark and grimy style and with several sequences of over-editing (just nail the damn camera to the floor and film the scene!), but it's oddly downbeat and doesn't end the way you'd expect...

Wicker Man. Oh dear. As a film in its own right it's not very good; as a remake of THE WICKER MAN it's shockingly bad. Atrocious, in fact.

Haven't actually watched it yet, but FilmFour have just introduced RE-ANIMATOR as fully uncut! It's always good to have a blank tape handy....

I saw THE NOTORIOUS BETTIE PAGE this afternoon. It's actually quite good, I think Gretchen Mol does a terrific job. They've captured the 50s look beautifully. By chance I was in the Cinema Store earlier and saw a book of Page pictures and the film looks pretty authentic in that regard. LADY IN THE W...
