I think this would be a good place to stop for a while - otherwise what are we going to discuss next week?
But belive you me - my discussion retort is written already!
To be continued after the 9th....

Re: AMER
First, I have to admonish you for calling Thin Man prim: The Thin Man series, especially the first one, is compelling in its' audacity to subert the detective genre: so was it in the book and so is it in the screen. Perhaps prim and proper by today's standards but certainly not then. And Yes I did s...
Re: AMER
Oh I do think this is going to be going on for a while. Giles, I think your lovely comparison of Amer with early Bertolucci is rather nice but I feel it might be a way of channelling Amer into different territory - I still remain resolutely set in my way that Amer is a giallo. The way we're looking ...
Re: AMER
If you come to the next Duke, we can talk about it at length!
Re: AMER
I'm going to have to interject - whatever anyone thought of the film, I really have to defend its' definition as a 'giallo' because I think it could not be more of a giallo if it tried. Leaving aside the plot and the lack of narrative - think of Amer as the purest distillation of the elements of gia...
Re: AMER
Breathtakingly imaginative and deceptively simple - 'Amer' was the film of the weekend for me. I had my reservations going in but once it got going, I could not take my eyes of the screen for a single moment. I can honestly say that the I kept re-thinking about Amer not for the rest of the day but t...

Re: A LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN
Absolutely fantastic opportunity to view one of the bona fide giallo classsic on the big screen. It was brilliant watching the extra material and hearing the absolutely gorgeous soundtrack at such a high volume.
More restored classic giallos, I say!

In Glasgow tomorrow sometime around midday - got Zero Focus at 18.00 as part of the festival and planning to do a double bill on Friday Morning.
Other than that anyone around and want to have a drink, let us know.

Re: Films and Recommendations - The Horror-The Horror 25/10/2009
Just before Glasgow, here's something to keep you going: And Soon The Darkness (1970): Now that it's being remade, we might as well remember this brilliant slice of paranoia from the 1970's. Two English, Jane and Cathy, go on a cycling holiday in rural France and during an argument end up splitting ...

Re: Films and Recommendations - The Horror-The Horror 25/10/2009
For those who think we've given up on championing the unknown, the unloved and the unbeliavable - here is a brilliant film to start your weekend: Kisaragi (2007): It's recent yes but no one seems to have watched this gem of a film on the Western shores. A dark comedy with many implausible twists and...

The fight to promote the odd and the unloved continues. Today: Messiah Of Evil (1973): Imagine if you will a never-before written H.P. Lovecraft story told with the most psyched-out and weird set design you are ever likely to encounter with an antmosphere as poetic and dreamy as any Jean Cocteau fil...

Re: Films and Recommendations - The Horror-The Horror 25/10/2009
Another weekend, another under-the-radar curio. This time from the very recent past. 'Arrivederci, Amore, Ciao' (2006): Who loves Stage Fright? Ok - 'Dellamorte, Dellamorte?' The man behind all those gems returns with an altogher different kind of scare film. Michele Soavi is back, ladies and gentle...

No retreat, No Surrender - Onwards with the new and the forgotten. Out of the mists of the past comes: 'Murder By Decree': Keeping with the appropiate Holmes-mania out there, here's a little reminder of a great film. Directed by Bob Clark (The genius behind The Night Andy Came Home ie Dead Of Night ...

Re: Best 10 Movies 2009
Here's my top 10 and worst 10 in no particular order. Best Of 2009 - 1) White Ribbon Michael Haneke constructs perhaps what is most comprehensive and self-contained look at fascism the screen has ever seen - set on the cusp of World War I, a small Austrian village is beset by strange events which ar...

New Year, New Films - here's one to start the day with panache: Eye Of The Tiger : Do you like 80's action films? Do you like Gary Busey? Do you like killer pick-up trucks decked out like Kit from Knight Rider? Do you like the song 'Eye Of The Tiger'? Well, all your prayers have been answered becaus...
