Re: Odd Thomas

Bombastic and silly as you'd expect from Sommers. It had some decent acting and script, and it was well made, but there were too many plot holes (the contradictory actions of the Bodachs, the unnecessary complexity of the evil plot that requires two of them to become police officers, the redundancy ...

Re: CHUCK STEEL: RAGING BALLS OF STEEL JUSTICE

Great short. One of the best surprises of the festival. I found on the Immortal Pictures website there's a trailer featuring even more Chuck Steel exploits:

Re: Bottom Five Films

From least to most hated: 5. Dark Touch Big disappointment for me. Some neat underlying ideas, but too badly written and acted to work properly. 3/10 4. Hatchet III Worst of the three Hatchets. Badly paced and I didn't find any of the humour funny, but the gory deaths were good. 3/10 3. In Fear Peop...

Re: The Demon's Rook

I didn't like. Terrible acting and almost completely plotless and meandering. I did like the demon costumes and the gory demon attacks, but everything else was awful, though it did have some unintentional laughs (the hot slime line in particular). 3/10

Re: In Fear

Just too much driving around and too little threat or much horror. After around a third of the way through I was convinced that there was going to be a "Dead End" style "they were dead all along" twist, but it never happened and left most of the events of the film completely inex...

Re: V/H/S 2

Most of the anthology segments are quite good to decent, with good jump scares and humour, although without some of the more psychological elements of the previous V/H/S, but the "Safe Haven" segment stands head and shoulders above the rest: disturbing and horrific, it builds to an excelle...

Re: Haunter

Pretty mainstream ghost story aimed at teenage girls, but it's a good film that's worth recommending. It has a lot of problems in that the complexity of the fantasy setup takes a lot of explanation and the rules often seem arbitrary, which distanced me from events, but the emotional component, while...

Re: 100 Bloody Acres

OK horror-comedy, and although it has a few scenes that raise good laughs, they're too few and far between. Nothing special, but has a lot of aspects to enjoy 5/10

Re: No One Lives

A good slice of cheesy horror nonsense. The main psycho was really cool, and it was a lot of fun watching him. He's pretty much superhuman, but it works in the context of the film. The dialogue is poor: everybody speaks in a very mannered way, but it does include some funny one-liners which balance ...

Re: Frankenstein's Army

The real reason to watch this film are the amazing and brilliantly imaginative creatures that have been created. All of the monsters are unique and fascinating to look at. Unfortunately, when the creatures or piles of corpses aren't on screen the film isn't nearly as interesting, but as the film get...

Re: R.I.P.D

Almost a carbon copy of Men in Black , with "Deaddos" instead of aliens. The film is significantly dumber than Men in Black though, and is much more on a par with Men in Black 2 , which, like this, tried to copy the original to lesser effect. R.I.P.D. even steals the idea of having the sec...

Re: Cheap Thrills

The best film of the festival so far for me. It takes a simple concept - what would you be willing to do if somebody paid you enough? and spins a riveting story around this, developing the characters and cleverly orchaestrating their shifting relationships to each other. It feels like it would have ...

Re: Hammer of the Gods

The worst film of the festival so far for me, and to rub it in, it's not even a horror. The overriding problem is just how boring and uninteresting it is. It starts with the macho Viking characters ride across the Brecon Beacons arguing and having fights with Saxons. During this section it's dull bu...

Re: Dementamania

I liked the flashy direction which held my interest and some enjoyably quirky characters, but unfortunately this never goes anywhere: Ed is seeing visions at the beginning of the film and it never really advances from there so that he's still seeing visions until the end. There's a great bit towards...
