Re: Final Destination 5 - 3D

A big improvement on the poor previous instalment and a good addition to the franchise. Does what we expect - a string of inventive deaths - well and with humour. I liked how it played with how the victims were going to die and the links to the previous films. However, to state the obvious, not a lo...

Re: Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark

I can see why they thought it could be a PG13, but I can also see why it has been rated 'R'. More horror content than I expected given the warning before the movie. Reminded me a little of 'Drag Me To Hell', while there were some effective and sustained sequences of suspense and atmosphere. However,...

Re: Hobo with a Shotgun @FrightFest Glasgow

If you love trashy '80s horrors with a sense of humour, you'll probably lap this up. I wasn't always sure whether some of the dialogue was intentionally funny, or just plain bad, while some of the performances were manically over the top. This film reminded me of Mad Max , Caligula and Tokyo Gore Po...

Re: 'Spit it out or I'll cut it out': Machete Maidens Unleas

An entertaining look at the Filipino film industry from the '60s to the early '80s. The documentary covers the horror, sci-fi, exploitation, action and war genres. I preferred the first half of the doc to the second, although it was good to see Apocalyse Now featured alongside the lesser known grind...

Re: Little Deaths, Lots of Horror!

Bizarre British sex and death anthology with some interesting ideas, even if some of the endings were a little too predictable. Certainly different to the usual multiplex fare - and I somehow doubt that this film will turn up at the multiplexes due to the strong content. Some memorable scenes help c...

Re: Thank You!

Thank you to the organisers, the empire staff, the other helpers, the guests and the fans!

Another very good year with plenty of decent films and a nice range of them too.

I did try to thank Ian post-Eli Roth signing, but I didn't really express it very well - a bit tired by that point!

Re: Isle of Dogs

Really surprised about some of the criticisms of this film, as I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be buying the DVD when it comes out. Still, everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, some of the (implied or otherwise) criticism of why this film was selected for FF as it is not "horror"...

Re: Outcast

An intriguing fable, mixing fantasy with a council estate, a hunt and a monster on the prowl. A good performance by the young female lead, and the story was a little different to usual, but the identity of the beast was no surprise and not all will appreciate the fantasy elements. I liked it though....

Re: Finale

Agree that this wasn't that bad. A supernatural devil-worshipping tale that had some interesting ideas and some good scenes, but overall it didn't really hang together. Intriguing and with some good deaths, but it was somewhat predictable and there was some really stupid behaviour on display by the ...

Re: Last Exorcism

***Spoilers*** I thought there was a demon in the flames, but maybe I imagined it as well....! One of the best of the fest for me, with some unnerving and jumpy moments and a well-sustained mystery of whether Nell was really possessed, acting or had a mental illness. I thought the ending will divide...

Re: Red White & Blue

***Spoilers*** A gritty film dealing with a number of weighty issues (HIV, cancer, social outcasts etc) that builds slowly to the incendiary climax. I loved the realistic, dark tone of the movie and the way that the events spiralled out of control. However, the mid-film cut to the band's story was j...

Re: Bedevilled

***Spoilers*** A slow burner examining the events leading up to the bloody vengeance in the second half of the film. I liked how it explored themes such as the abusive husband and the indifference of the other relatives as this added a bit of meat and realism to the story. However, it did seem to ta...

Re: The Dead

A very good addition to the zombie sub-genre, with plenty of action and gore sequences, in this homage to Romero and others. I thought the settings really added flavour to the movie, while the Daniel character added good support. I agree with maxmum on Rob Freeman - I thought he was a little wooden ...

Re: VIDEO NASTIES DOCUMENTARY / DISCUSSION

Excellent doc looking at the era of censorship under the Thatcher regime, an age that still resonates today. The follies and absurdities of the censorship front are explored, as well as how the industry didn't help itself. There is a reasonable balance of viewpoints presented. I also liked the allus...

The best day of the fest for me, really not sure which to go for, but The Last Exorcism just pips Video Nasties.
