DVD WORLD..DO NOT BUY!!

Post by chuckie steel »

Sorry guys had to say that, I brought the last copy because of two movies on the front for free, one being Sleepless (the main reason why I brought it) but its not free..you have to pay another £5 to unlock Sleepless so all you get is Day of the dead 2..which is not worth the waste of time watching it!! sorry for the rant but thought I should tell you guys to save your money

Although I'm not keen on the double-film coverdiscs where you have to 'unlock' the second film (or coverdiscs in general) myself, I wouldn't say that's a reason not to buy the magazine.
DVD World have done this a few times in the past but I still enjoy the magazine itself.

With the latest issue, Brycie has re-vamped the magazine - cutting out all the prawn stuff and dubious adverts in the back - and, in doing so, I think he's improved the magazine no end. Plus, the coverdisc has gone back to one film only (a very nice copy of Night of The Hunted).

Anyway, I know it's "each to his own" as regards tastes in magazines - but I just wanted to point out the positives as well. What with the demise (permanent or, hopefully, temporary) of Dark Side I don't want to see Allan's other main project go down the pan as well.
I bet you think you know all about vampires ... believe me, you know f@*& all.

yeah that was what DVD WORLD now is, I used to get it a bit as a kid and always feel a bit sketchy about buying it as the porn at the back was a bit full on for my young eyes haha

Whatever you do, don't criticise a magazine in public

I've just covered DVD World (the new "non-porn" version!) on my blog!

http://cyberschizoid.blogspot.com/2010/ ... azine.html

I have bought it on and off over the years(usually based on the cover mounted dvd) and definately like the direction they're moving in.

I agree with the above poster about the "locked" double movie dvds being really annoying!! Especially as they don't make it clear on the cover of the magazine that you have to pay extra for the second film.

This is why I don't buy magazines, I can find out what I need to know online so much quicker.

Anyone else of the belief that sometime soon that magazines will become redundant (starting with GZ hopefully!!)

I love print, being out and about most days i don't get much time on the computer,so my copies of Fangoria and DarkSide stay in the van for several weeks, being read by myself and non-horror loving workmates, who have watched films recommended by the magazines that they normally wouldn't and are slowly warming to other offerings in the genre.
Now thats gone,i'm genuinely gutted,I'm not going to be printing out pieces every 5 mins to take into work, and ignoring the elephant in the room, there isn't a suitable replacement for any of these on the market, wait, excluding the SFX horror issue, which was a great example of how to do it right,(just don't mention Pontins)
And what happens to genre writers like Alan Jones? Fangoria was pretty much the only place I could find his on-set visits and write-ups,and I guess online blogging can't pay the bills,or fund said visits, sad to see the magazines that have nurtured and fed my blood lust over the years just disappear.

I still hold out hope for a Frightfest magazine, there's enough writers on these forums to do it,any of you rich enough? :)

Count me in....

I'd write reviews in the style of me reccomending (or not) films to see as if I was having this conversation with my friends. I can never compete with people whose knowledge of the horror genre far exceeds mine nor would I ever attempt to. Any review written by me will always be based on wether a film is worth a couple of hours of your life, will it scare/entertain/fixate you and does it do what it sets out to do. I try and speak to the people that are where I was a few years ago, getting back into horror and want to know wether a certain film is worthy of their time and money.

I have always been an advocate of a FF magazine and always will be, I read reviews on here and follow people on Twitter and that says to me there are plenty of people who contribute on here and attend FF to make making such a publication worthwhile.

So a horror festival + a magazine + contributions from its readers/attendees = something I would buy.

When is the first issue on sale?

I'd quite happily chip in a few reviews every month, I don't want anything for it and the recognition that the small part I play in making a possible magazine a success would be payment enough for me.

FrightFest has plenty of knowledgeable people but i'm happy to do my share to speak to the newbie audience and to see it from their point of view, I was where you are not that long ago.

Just a thought, there seems to be plenty of people on here with valid and knowledgable opinions. And if you asked me, as a possible customer, would I buy such a publication then the answer would be a resounding yes.

If SFX can do a one off horror special then could FF do the same, offering people the chance to contribute with the magazine getting a release in the summer and offered for sale at the main summer event.

Ian and Paul, it's over to you....

Would be awesome to see a FF magazine...though cant say i was sad to see The Dark Side go. Used to buy it religiously as one of UK's very few genre mags, but its redundancy became all too apparent sometime around the 429th article about "video nasties" and, especially, its much documented plagiarism of articles and reviews from the web and other publications. For shame.
