Blockbuster Video

Post by Pukka »

Does anyone out there still make trips to their local Blockbuster store anymore or are you all using the online rental versions (Lovefilm, Blockbuster etc)?

I was so looking forward to last Friday night when I wanted to take advantage of their 4 for a tenner offer and catch up on some dvds I'd missed. The highlight of my visit was quickly picking up one of seventy or so copies of Daybreakers 'exclusive to store' no less, before noting the 15 cert, (cinema version! Not for me thanks) and quickly putting it back. Browsed the whole store, asked the 'nobody' behind the counter if they got a Harpoon in stock. No. Nothing. Sod all. Where's Stag Night, Dorothy, High Lane, House of the Devil? Honestly, what a pants selection our branch has. I bet all these films are available at their online equivelant. Are these stores doomed, because they should be! :(

i rarely ever rent from blockbusters, maybe only if im desperate to see a film and i dont want to buy it,but often enough its just as cheap to purchase from supermarkets, unfortunately for most towns blockbusters is the only place to get a rental movie.
compared to 20 years ago there were 2 -3 other rental stores now we have only one in a radius of 10-15 miles and it rakes in money.
i find blockbusters expensive for renting, not very competitive for the dvd sales and their pre owned dvd pricing is beyond belief sometimes.
i used to use tescos online rental servcie but havent renewed it as i dont get the time to watch movies as often as i used to.
its interesting that they do get the early rental windows for films before they do come on sale, but i would rather wait and put the money to a purchase than a rental, still often go and browse then as they do have bargains from time to time.

Haven't used it in years, but...

If FF plan on showing one or two Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sequels I was going to dust off my card and rewatch the first one again.

Wish me luck finding it :)

I tend to use the online services, but if there's a particular new film I'm interested in that didn't have a cinema release (eg Valhalla Rising*) I'm not going to wait until they randomly send it to me some two years down the line. Plus, I had no films for the weekend so BB's £10 for 4 movies was a reasonable option.

Never been to Blockbusters for years, last time was when I lived in Blackpool and that would be about 9 years ago.

For the cost or renting i'd rather pay a few quid more and own the disc, even if it means waiting till it comes down in price on hmv.com but then at least it's my own.

Looks like I'm going to have to pop down to Asda to see if they've got anything... Think I seen 'High Lane' in there for £8. There usually price their B movie stock quite reasonably :) Sod Blockbuster, through with 'em.

My local Blockbuster is apparantely closing down so they can build flats there. I haven't bothered renting from there in a really long time as they generally don't have a very good horror movie selection, but i have on occasion bought a few decent ex-rentals for a couple of quid each.
Now i get my rentals fron Lovefilm, i think they have a much more choice.

WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION

If you live in South London or aren't afraid to cross the river, then you can come to my videoshop FILMNIGHT right next to Balham tube station.

We do three films for a fiver, and are beginning to specialise in horror and particularly Frightfest films.
We also have a built in internet cafe to check reviews or trailers or surf this very forum, as I'm doing now.
I just ordered copies of Zombie Women of Satan. Get in!!!

If you tell me you're Frightfest folk I'll even give you free sweeties and the dubious benefit of my oppinions.

Y'all come on down now.

Blockbuster "Wow! What a difference!" Video?!?
Forget that! Support your local independant video store and just see if they don't give you a better deal.

ZWOS has been delayed, probably due to this Miss Zombie UK Beauty Pageant on the 16th, to which I will certainly be going. I still love that film and everything about it but i'm well aware I'm beating a lonely drum on that one.
I do have other films too, a few thousand of them, sadly i can't build a business on trashy horror flicks alone.
400 miles is a long way, but if anybody on the Northern line feels like making a trip to Balham I'll do good deals for any Frightfesters who make the journey.

Well I look forward to seeing you either at Filmnight Balham or Miss Zombie UK, whichever happens sooner.
Are you actually entering the pageant?

No, I thought about it, but they're more after the alternative/ burlesque types, which isn't really my thing. Looking forward to going along and seeing what entertainment they put on though, should be good fun! :)

I still visit my store 1-2x a week. There are a lot of DTV/indie movies (most suck, to be honest) that I would never have heard of as they don't turn up in "if you liked this then you will like these" type suggestions. And like I said, a lot of them I wish I never saw, but for the rare Baby Blues or Return In Red (two films I rented from the store blind), I think it's worth the effort.
