films we just saw
This weekend I caught up on a couple of films that I'd recently missed
30 Days Of Night - was definately one of the better vampire films of recent years. After a relatively slow start where I thought none of the action was going to be shown on screen I ended up being pleasantly surprised by the amount of gore. Well worth a watch
Southland Tales - seeing as I loved Donnie Darko its safe to say that this was never going to live up to such a high standard, but it wasn't as much of a mess as I was lead to believe from reviews. Sure, the director tried to add too many 'current affairs' into the plot which watered down any points he was trying to make, but it kept me entertained enough.

Re: Enitty/Terror Within
i still havent seen the Manitou but saw the trailer on youtube, and the beast within trailer and transformation scenes too, must haves for cheesy horror.Notts Pete wrote:Bugger, I forgot to record The Entity at the weekend. Not seen it since it's orginal VHS release. Would've like to see how it's held up over the years. Always thought it would make a great double bill with that mad Tony Curtis flick The Manitou.
Was Terror Within the one with Roddy McDowell where they re-used the 'birth' scene from Humanoids from The Deep?
i read the book manitou, along with a few other graham masterton novels, wishmaster always seemed ripped off from Djinn?
and read quite a frank de felitta books who wrote the entity.

Charmless, ugly, tedious, vulgar.... But enough about me. Rise Of The Footsoldier is a repugnant British gangster tale chronicling the lives and brutalities of a set of thuggish gangland bruisers, culminating in the "legendary" Range Rover Murders in Ess3x (and told better in Ess3x Boys). It really, really, desperately wants to be Scorsese but it just ends up as Guy Ritchie without the flash. And given that everyone involved is a mindless, seething lump of fury and violence who'd beat up a Citroen 2CV if they though it was looking at them funny, it's strangely tough to get that upset when they end up shot in the face. (On the contrary, it was almost enough to start me dancing which is no mean feat.)
Next time Mrs Blockbuster points at the box and says "that's a really good one", I'll quietly put it back and rent something else.... Lesson learned.

The Manitou/Rise of the Footsoldier
Can't remember all that much about The Manitou - though I know at the time I was impressed that the demon was played by Felix Silla, Twikki from Buck Rogers, I didn't really know who this 'Tony Curtis' fellow was !!
Thanks for the warning about Rise of the Footsoldier, I've nearly picked that up myself on a poor choice rental night.
As Joe Pesci's Lethal Weapon character would say; "They f*&@ you at the Blockbuster!"
Going to stop writng now before I go into a grumpy old man rant about the demise of the old independent video shops ....

well i have only seen The Eye out of those 3 but did really enjoy it.STun wrote:Not been able to see any films lately and know got loads to catch up on.
I know there's nothing amazing out at the mo but out of P2, They Eye remake and The Shutter remake, which one is worth seeing (if any?)
so that gets my thumbs up.
i did rent shutter the original version, but soon turned it off,and i dont feel i missed anything by doing that.

I'd say P2 - that's the only one even remtoely engaging out of the three.
The Eye is terrible. Jessica Alba looks embarassed to be in it and you know a third degree carbon copy of a carbon copy film is simply going to end up being distinctly crap.
Shutter remake is almost a blueprint in how not to remake a film. They take everything that was good and interesting about the original and then ram at it until it no longer resembles anything remotely scary. I still rate the original Shutter as one of the most engaging horror film from 2004 - it's nothing new but it certainly does what it does very, very well.
P2 on the other hand is fun. Unoriginal but fun.
Anyway that's my two bits
Sincerely yours
Voor

despite my disappointment with P2 if those are the only three options available then P2 isthe clear winner.
Wrestlemaniac its been a while when a film has so openly failed to deliver on the promise of its title and premise. A maniac who kills with wrestling techniques? gold. Sadly none of it was mined for the resulting movie.
Sure the tongue in cheek mood is right on, but everything is done off screen bar one short skirmish with a pee poor Hurley from Lost clone. The p.orn level actors are appropriatlety enough playing p.orn actors making a movie in the most unhygenic location possible outside of a sewer.
Its only short but takes a while to get going and its gory enough once the faces start peeling off.
it did have an interesting premise and this lead to a great alternate use of the usual Gov. created beast. This time the Mexican Gov. did experiments to create the ultimate wrestler in order to win the 1968 Olympics. Sadly that reveal is the movies comic high point.
Though it probably would have been the most violent slasher ever had it followed through with its death by pile driver conceit.
3:10 to Yuma, having not seen the original ive no special dislike if this film cos its a remake. No it made me dislike it all on its own.
It looks decent enough but the story has so many flaws u just wanna scream "WTF". The ending belonged to a much better constructed story. And it might have worked better with the lead roles reveresed. not a complete waste of time though.

I think P2 has been and gone now, but of those three it's far and away the best. The Eye actually isn't too bad if you can forget (or never saw) the original.STun wrote:I know there's nothing amazing out at the mo but out of P2, They Eye remake and The Shutter remake, which one is worth seeing (if any?)
And Shutter.... oh, for focus sake. This is just aperture-ish and I wish they'd just f-stop it. (Sorry.)
The idea works because we've all taken pictures, while very few of us have fought off serial killers, vampires or aliens. It taps into something we're all familiar with. And the original spun it into a creepy and highly effective ghost story. But this new one just blandifies the whole thing to sub-Grudge prattle. Never mind Ringu, this isn't as scary as Pingu. Don't bother. (Incidentally, matters weren't helped by the projection box being run by Francis The Talking Mule, to judge from the lousy sound and shoddy gauging. Not that decent sound and picture would have made matters noticeably better.)

I say see P2. At least that is entertaining. Can't comment on Shutter. Haven't see that yet. The Eye remake was good but the original is far better.
Going off viewing tack some what and saw Vexille at the ICA. Highly enjoyable beautifully animated Japanese film. With a really foot tapping ambient, Japanese pop soundtrack featuring Paul Oakenfold and Dead Can Dance. Similar in Doomsday in setting in the future and breakdown of society. The robots in this film very much like Robo Cop. Worth a watch!

i saw Grindhouse at the Odeon was good to see this again, kind of wish i was seeing it for the 1st time again, with virgin eyes so to speak, was around this time last year i saw grindhouse at a freinds ,back at her place after a long night clubbing, cant remember a film, that had me so excited and was just enjoying every minute of it.
so a year later on a big screen, well it moves along a lot faster than i remembered (not watched it in a long time)i still love the werewolf women trailer, but Death Proof is a chore to watch so much dialogue, not needed, thats ok if its a bunch of gangsters sitting around a table talking about like a virgin or toby? toby choo? toby chan?
but its just padding, and whats with all the foot shots? shoe shots galore in PT & bare feet in DP too Quentin has a definite foot fetish.
still it all looked great on a large screen, just it would have been much better if it had been shown properly, like last nights screening, instead of the muddled releases, and that missing reel in PT still bugs me.
The Odeon was quick to close the curtains and stop the credits, grr i hate it when they do that.

The WTF Movie Of The Week (so far) is I Know Who Killed Me, a colour-coded piece of sleazy gibberish in which that nice and wholesome Lindsay Lohan swears, smokes, bonks and pole-dances. It's completely bonkers and it goes on way too long. I got the feeling it wanted to be something like Twin Peaks - the festering underbelly of happy-smiley American suburbia - but it just isn't in the Peaks league, the presence of significant owls notwithstanding. (And there's a phrase I never thought I'd ever type.)
