Inside

Wow, I really enjoyed this very much. I can't wait to see if Martyrs really does make this look like a Disney movie :D

One minor niggle though - does anyone know if the inclusion of the CGI baby footage an american thing, or was that in the original French print? While it didn't really detract anything from the film, I felt it didn't really add anything either.

had a little movie marathon with dangerous jamie yesterday, we started with

drunken wu tang a hilarious but very chaotic kung fu movie. Some crazy shit here, with as a highlight the WATER MELON MONSTER! Simply amazing!

Ninja wars missed a lot of the movie due to too much chatting but it looked really good, especially when you realise it's been made in the early 80's. The projectile vomit attack of one of the ninja;s was hilarious

Retard-o-tron 2 video mix tape a crazy mix of all kinds of cool stuff, good stuff to get absolutely pissed to, which we did.

Crazy dave tape 2 seen this so many times, it never gets boring. The ultimate mix tape full of horror, porn, and general weirdness.

Video armageddon mixtape by this time the 13 stella's i had made it very hard to focus, looked good though, more mix tape madness. gotta watch it again cus I can't remember a thing about it.

Today it was time for:

Evil - to kako good greek zombie movie, lots of gore, some laughs, enjoyedit

Star crash hilariously bad late 70's sci fi, very cheesy. It took a while for the Hoff to appear, but as he is the cheesiest person in the world he fitted right in.

Zombie Strippers what a load of non sense, I loved it! the ping pong and pool ball had me in stitches, as did the bit where the genator goes all mexican. Where the f$ck did that donkey from hahaha. Great stuff.
You can't do nothing right, Cooper! You stupid sonofabitch! You should have been destroyed at birth! That's what I get for teaming up with a hippie!

WALL-E!!! I loved every second... it was just so.. it was just awesome, the adventures of this little robot who's only friend was a cockroach :) Such a pretty film to watch.

Never Back Down - The trailer made it look like a right chav fest and although the film could have included stronger moral messages ala Rocky and Million Dollar Baby when it comes to fighting... this just delivers itslef as a good Karate Kid Wannabe... with rougher fight scenes :D I liked it but you can take it or leave it :D

well im not sure whether to thank Notts Pete or blame him for todays triple bill of 80s treats and going completely retro with the old video disc format before it became laserdisc :)
1st off have you ever been to Exorbia? no, nor me either till today and ended up starting with Forbidden World, this cheapie flick was knocked up & banged out in a few days,by new world pictures, the sets from galaxy of terror, with footage from battle beyond the stars,a metamorph is loose in a high security research facility, nudity, gore and the worst monster ever all appear in this flick, effects by John Carl Beuchler.
next up a film i havent seen since video and can do without seeing for the next 30 years Xtro its a bizarre movie from start to finish, with some good effects just the most tedious & slow story and plot line, the music is terrible ruins the film and makes it drag, still if you want to see bondgirl maryam dabo naked its the perfect movie for that,or see Anna Wing aka Lou Beale from Eastenders cop it from a giant action man, watch Xtro, produced by Robert Shaye, who i wonder changed it to bob shaye of new line cinema as its made in conjunction with.
oh and it has an annoying clown type midget i hate clowns and anything to do with them, they arent funny or entertaining just down right annoying in this film.
last but not least, the best of the bunch and one i hold a soft spot for
The Warning,Jack Palance, Martin Landau amongst others from horror films fight off an alien predator hunting for fun,it has the most disgusting creatures that the alien throws like a frisbee just yuk to look at and its a fun film thats pretty good overall, the alien was played by Kevin Hall who i wonder was Kevin Peter Hall of Predator?
This film was most likely the inspiration for predator & the alien looks like its from Star Trek its one worth checking out.
so thanks to NottsPete for my 80s triple bill

Journey to the Centre of the Earth-3D
A fair way to numb the brain. Brendan Fraser is back on likeable form in a fun romp that its really best to ignore the laws of physics while watching.
More of a strange sequel to the book rather than an adaptation its full of imagination in its second half.
The slower first half doesnt bore - despite the script having a clever nod to the potential boredom of those waiting for the adventure to begin.
The 3-D aspect is ok, working much better on depth of field shots than with the things coming at you malarky.
The most implausible thing in the film? That a woman that hot would still be single.

Meet Dave
Going to cop a lot of flack for this but whatever. I really enjoyed this.
The idea is a sci fi spin on The Numbskulls from Beano.
It was rather refreshing to have an African American star in a pretty colour blind movie for once. The modern vogue seems to require black characters to constantly reference their ethnicity.
Sure the plot twists are obvious and some of the supporting cast are lame to say the least. A much better actor needed to be Number 2 (they needed a Eugene Levy type) and the actor playing Number 4 is, at times, embarrasing but not hateful.
Theres a scene after the mutiny where little Eddie Murphy is ejected from the Eddie Murphy ship and it really doesnt last long enough.
Elisabeth Banks is very very nice to look at. And thats really all there is to her as she really cant act.
The two cops on the trail of the spaceship could also have been played by much better actors.
Overall its a nice way to spend a sunny afternoon; light, smut free, natural cultural references. At times theres a real retro 80s feel to it.

Tripfall
Being in charge of a Gotham Mob must have grown tiresome for our Eric Roberts as he now takes to loiterin around a summer resort.
Wearing dungerees, or vile haiwain shirts and speaking with a voice stolen from Cletus the slack jawed yokel. This is before you even get to THAT hair style. A little number that resembles an octopus stapled to his leering head.
Him and a couple of other trashy types decide to mess up John Ritter's family holiday by holdinig them hostage.
John Ritter married to Rachel Hunter isnt the only strech of the imagination this film requires. A mid movie escape is scuppered by Eric Roberts ability to teleport.
However the film is a good little exercise in tension and excitement.
But will Eric Roberts stay dead this time?

All part of the service.

Thing is, if that's the sort of stuff I subject friends to, imagine the kind of crappola you could've watched if you weren't so darned likeable !! :)

And it could've been worse, Xtro II with Jan Michael Vincent anybody ?

Just watched: Batman Begins. Off to the Broadway for The Dark Knight tonight & somehow hadn't seen the previous film. Rented from Blocky's yesterday and was very impressed. I'm not a huge fan of comic book/superhero films but I really liked it. Solid action scenes and a cool cast - Michael Caine looked like he was having a great time. Looking forward to tonight's follow-up.

Xtro gets a free pass due to Myriam D'abo nudeness.
Xtro 2 thankfully cut off mid airing on a obscure movie channel.

Often its best to leave these 80s classics to hazy memory though.
Monster Squad and SpaceHunter suffer on adult viewings.

Another one that isnt quite as wicked as remembered is
Deadly Friend
Made in the days when the female leads were pretty rather than dripping with sweat FHM "hotties".
Its a bizarre teen Frankenstein riff. BB is actually quite cute but its never really delved into why it turns maniacal. Its a horror film so he has to i guess.
The Marion Ramsey/BasketBall head interface is still the stand out scene here for it ludicrous nature.
Attention drifts at points and it all looks very TV.
That ending is still daft and senseless.

Basket Case 2
Is just as silly now as it was back in the 90s.
Freaks over designed to the point of fantasy. The strong colours and comic book feel to the movie is totally at odds with the dirty grungy feeling of the first one.
This isnt to say the film isnt any good. Its humourous and slightly tongue in cheek.

The Dark Knight at the Imax

Loved it! Also made me slightly sad... But yes fantastic! And I want to see it again 8)

Also we saw the trailer for Watchmen :D
I would rather be hated every damn day of my life for being real than loved for being something I'm not...

Mr Brooks Serial killer thing with Kevin Costner as the titular killer, William Hurt as his psyche (very much like Ed Harris' role in A Beautiful Mind, except he's decided to wear a cravat), Demi Moore as the cop on the case. It's quite entertaining, despite never actually being any good. Far too many subplots and the debt to Thomas Harris is enormous. Demi Moore's character is basically a cross between Will Graham and Clarice Starling and is even menaced at one point by a jogger in a hoody.

A few to get through this time....

First up, the dreaded Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End which - shock! - isn't bad at all, and a lot better than the draggy, confused second instalment. It's ridiculously long at 160 minutes, and has a nasty hanging sequence at the start; it's still needlessly overcomplicated and doesn't make a whole lot of sense - but where it scores over Pirates 2 is bringing back Geoffrey Rush who really has the hammy piratical approach it needs. There's a terrific sea battle on the edge of a whirlpool as well. Generally fun (I put it on at 10.30pm on Friday night, so it didn't finish till gone one in the morning - but I never drifted sleepwards) but Pirates 4 would be going too far.

Dark Town (aka Immortal Ecstacy) is a near-unwatchable piece of junk in which vampirism breaks out at a family birthday party. Some scenes of bad taste nastiness (a man takes the foetus from his pregnant daughter and vampirises it), gratuitous lesbianism and endlessly swearing gangstas fail to perk up a lot of footage of duff acting and stumbling around in the dark.

Back in the early eighties a few movies were singled out by feminist types for a campaign of cinema screens paint-sloshing. One was the celebrated Roger Corman exploitationer Humanoids From The Deep (released in this country as Monster) in which scaly monsters from the ocean floor invade the beaches, kill the men and rape the women. It's since been remade (again as Humanoids From The Deep) with Robert Carradine and one-time soap legend Emma Samms, and without the rape and gore scenes. Instead of it being cheap and nasty, it's just cheap and dull.

I managed to see Bloodrayne this weekend as well - Uwe Boll's 474th videogame adaptation with a great cast. Michael Madsen and Michelle Rodriguez as vampire hunters! Udo Kier reciting exposition in a monastery (probably wearing the same costume as Mother Of Tears)! Meat Loaf as a louche vamp surrounded by naked Romanian prostitutes! SIR BEN KINGSLEY as the bad guy! And Kristanna (Terminator 3) Loken as the Lara Croft geek fantasy figure of the title. It's mainly awful (it is a Uwe Boll movie), but there's some pleasingly excessive bits of splatter, and the assembly of big names raises the interest. Ben Kingsley?!?!? he was Gandhi, for crying out loud!

Flash Point is an enjoyably violent throwback to the glory days of violent Hong Kong cop movies, with Donnie Yen as the maverick cop taking down a gang of evil thieves and kicking seven bags of soot out of them. Very much by the numbers, but there are some terrific and painful-looking fight sequences. (And an exploding chicken.)

Finally, the weeks' best title: Satan In High Heels is a trashy but enjoyable bit of mild b/w sleaze that's even older than I am - dating from 1961. In which a brassy showgirl washes up at a New York nightclub; seducing the owner, falling in love with his son, and belting out The Female Of The Species while dressed in leather riding gear. Back at the time, the BBFC rejected it completely and it's still got an 18 despite having no nudity, sex, gore, violence, drug use or swearing (though it looks like they classified the whole DVD complete with more graphic trailers, rather than classifying the feature on its own, which would be borderline 12A/15 at most).

I managed to get tickets to see TDK last thursday and I loved it. Thought it was an amazing film and the acting in it from everyone was first class. What I also liked is that even though Heath Ledger was amazing in it, its not The Joker's movie, he is a peripheral character who manipulates Harvey Dents descent into "Two Face" just because he can. This is not just a great comic book movie, it is a great movie full stop. Along with No Country for Old Men this is my film of the year. Even the projector breaking down at the beginning and the group of Chav kids at the front couldnt ruin it for me!
I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!

Yeah, that was a lucky escape with your viewing of Xtro II , ghouldrool :)

I was probably at an impressionable age when I first saw Xtro so it kinda has a special place in my heart !! I do agree with Grindhouse that it is slow-moving and a bit hard-going but it seemed to have a level of sleaziness about it (with the impregnation/birth scene, D'Abo's gratuitous sex scene and the awful 'sucking' sequence) that endures it to me !!
I was going to ask Maryam D'Abo to sign an Xtro poster for me at a convention the other year but bottled it at the last minute - would probably have gotten a slap for asking anyway, I managed to upset Vicki Michelle last year by asking her to sign a Virgin Witch lobby card

Have fond memories of Craven's Deadly Friend from the old days of VHS.
That kid from TV's Whizz Kids and Kristy 'Buffy' Swanson !!
I read at the time that Anne Ramsey's death scene was re-shot to spice the movie up a bit. It certainly did stick in the memory - if anyone's ever done a better death by basketball sequence, I've yet to see it !!

Caught ...Mandy Lane this weekend.

It was okay. And I haven’t really got much to say aside from the fact that I don’t think I've seen a picture which quite despises -- or believes itself above -- the genre quite as much as this beautifully shot but tonally deficient and utterly smug indie sensation. If the picture's job was to make the passionate horror fan feel as ostracised as Mandy Lane's geeky pal, then it succeeded. I haven’t felt that talked down to since I read Pauline Kael's review of Temple Of Doom.

The talent evident from most all department was obvious and it could have been a terrific picture. Could have been…if the folks who made it believed anything other than a horror picture is a tactical way to sell a commercial first feature ("but let's take out all the bits that make it a silly, silly old horror film. Eh?") I may be deeply cynical, but the whole thing felt like a gargantuan snub.

Also, the interview with Amber Heard on the disc is quite possibly the most awkward one I've ever seen. Not Optimum's fault at all, I'm sure it was all in good faith. It's just that...dear god, girl... In about 10 years, when I'm sure Amber Heard will still have a pretty good career, it'll be things like that which will haunt her burgeoning days as a movie star.

The practice continues>>>>

THE DEATHS OF IAN STONE Had seen a couple of the after dark horrofest movies from the last couple of years such as RINNE, FRONTIERE(S) & THE ABANDONED and thought they were all really good. From what I'd read though it seemed I had exhausted all the good ones that played... I was really wrong because this was great... Original in the respect that it ripped off a combination of different movies that don't usually get mixed together, good looking, pacy, fairly well acted & some great FX & character design made this one of my surprise highlights of the week...

WANTED... what can i say? Timur Bekmambetov comes to america and makes the best, strangest, exciting action movie in years... The only thing that I didn't like about this movie is the fact that by Bekmambetov making this it looks like TWILIGHT WATCH (or DUSK WATCH or whatever it was going to be called) is probably not going to get made...

DRILLBIT TAYLOR... Chucked this one on for a change of pace... Nothing suprising, just a nice safe movie with a few good laughs... could have done with 20mins shaved off though...

NEVER BACK DOWN
... Why oh why did I do this to myself... Karate Kid for the happy slap generation... with callous and unlikeable characters, unexciting fight scenes and a message that pretty much says as long as you persistantly act like a d+ck you'll end up getting your own way, the girl and the respect of your peers this truly was one to miss... although theres probably quite a lot of truth in that message...

so, to purge myself of this awful piece of generic sh+te i watched...

FUNKY FOREST: THE FIRST CONTACT
... Holy cr+p!!... I'm not going to pretend i understood anything that happened, i'm not sure i want to... It's like one long bizarre, happy, cronenburgian dream sequence cut up into little segments and rearranged into... i just don't know anymore.... Possibly the strangest two and a half hours of entertainment i have ever had... absolutely loved it
many things can be preserved in alcohol... dignity is certainly not one of them...

The unspeakableness continues! I don't know where I first heard of I Am The Ripper, but it arrived yesterday, I forced myself through to the end of it last night and it's going back today. A bunch of French teenagers at a party knife, beat and impale each other to death after the arrival of a masked killer, then they all go to some sort of pre-Hell limbo where they kill each other all over again, firing shotguns at each other several times over the soul of a cute girl with a lip ring. There's also a sort of Disciplinary Tribunal of Demons in a wood somewhere. Totally incomprehensible, lasts forever, full of shouting idiots and atrociously shot on the cheapest camcorder they could find. Everything about it is just amateur night at the abbatoir. I think this actually is the Worst Movie I've Seen This Millennium.

Ruggero Deodato's Off Balance: Phantom Of Death (both titles are on the screen) is better, but coming straight after I Am The Ripper an hour of Cillit Bang adverts would be better. It's weird to see the ageless Michael York suffering an incurable aging disease that makes him older than veteran cop Donald Pleasence (on the trail of a homicidal maniac). Really, it's not very good; one of Pleasence's last appearances and he is, as I think has been mentioned on these boards before, frail and shaky and forever leaning on things. He does get one great scene of stumbling around in the street in a fury, yelling "Where are you? I'll get you, you murdering bastard!" over and over. Pretty grim and ultimately rather depressing.
