Watched The Omen earlier, the original, and i just love the atmosphere through out the whole film, mostly due to Jerry Goldsmiths Soundtrack.

Then watched Damien: The Omen 2, not a bad film, but it lacks the atmosphere and danger that came with the original, especially for Damien.

I'll watch the third when i have time, off to Orphan later so hopefully i won't leave the cinema disappointed, much like i did after Friday The 13th.[/b]

After watching the trailer for The Orphan. I thought it would be a cliched ridden tosh in the same realm as The Unborn or The Uninvited.

I was proved wrong. A very entertaining, nicely paced film with a couple of good jumps. Building tension through out The little girl -Esther was well creepy. A film that does not have a "no signal on mobile".

Quite a nice change to have child who is completely warped.

Would anyone agree that Orphan is more of a Thriller then a Horror? Regardless of genre though it was a very well acted film, the twist was interesting also, wouldn't of seen something like that coming.

Although i am now weary of my nephew ¬_¬

That's the one....the dick shaped space ship, the impotent cock-ball team, the pissing king kong, etc!

And now that it's made it on to DVD, on the menu screen you get a tit to move around as a cursor!!!

I'm going to be very wary next time my gf recommends a film!!!

1991 yes thats it! Out of pure nostalgia ... and yes well because I did find it stupidly amusing ... I just bought it for £2.89 from Play :D

Watched Mesrine:Killer Instinct. Vincent Cassel was excellent. I can see the comparisons with Goodfellas. Looking forward to seeing Part 2. Shame have to wait till after August.

I agree with Lupogirl- Mesrine was a stunning piece of cinema with an outstanding lead turn from Cassel. The main fault I have with film is having to wait until September for the second part (it opens on the Fri of Frightfest).

I also saw Orphan on the same day and likewise I expected the same cliched Hollywood horror but came away pleasantly surprised. The acting, especially from Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard was first rate and the tension was ratched up well by the director. It is true, you probably won't guess the little girl's secret but even without a twist in the tale, this film works really well.

I trekked down to London today to see Mesrine, but as Cineworld had bunged it down into the teeny-weeny Screen 3 viewing booth somewhere in the bowels of their Haymarket triple (tiny screen, too-bright ambient light) I walked away. I'll catch it in Milton Keynes later this week. Instead I checked out Orphan and was surprised, given that it comes from the auteur behind the rubbish House Of Wax remake, that I rather enjoyed it. It's far too long and could stand to lose 15-20 minutes, but it is pleasantly grim and nasty-edged.

And then I wandered over to the NFT for Cleopatra, which I'd never seen, and it's pretty damn good. Four hours long, with an intermission, and shown on a 70mm print in excellent quality. Maybe it could do with some scissors carefully applied to some of the yadda yadda yadda, but as a monumental piece of cinema, and genuinely epic in scope and size, I thought it was terrific.

I do hope the use of the word autuer there was sarcasm.

Orpahan in my eyes was actually very well paced with surprisingly little flab. Sure the stuff about the mums alcholism could have been trimmed but it featured in the plot.
Its a throw back to films such as Hand that Rocks the Cradle and Single White Female about a poisonous force within your own environment.
Performances are great except when the grown ups are required to be more histronic.
Once Esthers secret is revealed the depth of just how messed up she must be adds a level of the tragic to the otherwise business as usual finale (that one incident aside).

Tragic, sickening, touching and hilarious all often in the same few minutes is the fantastic piece of cinema that is Bad Boy Bubby.
Raised to his mid thirties to believe the world outside is poisonous, and that sex with mother is normal Bubby eventually leaves to make his own way in the world.
This is akin to a mentally ill and very Australian Odyssey. Bubbys rollercoaster journey is highly affecting and it subverts expectation on nearly every occasion.

I know, I know, it's my own fault. Well, partly. After the ramshackle The 13th Sign (potential to be okay if they'd been able to spend some money on it) and the frankly insulting Dust (how many walked out? how long before they started?) I was reluctant to bother with Broken. But no, everyone said it was much better and it was okay and everything. Except it wasn't. So I said no more.

So yes, the upshot is that they sent me The Devil's Chair, and hurrah because that's a fourth stinker out of four. Congratulations. If The 13th Sign was a bog-standard horror quickie that desperately needed a lot more money so it could pay for proper actors and some decent post-production (but is ultimately no better or worse than a hundred other camcorder obscurities on the Film 2000 or HardGore labels), Dust was an intolerable pain in the backside full of yuppie scum, indecipherable shrieking and drunken horseplay, and Broken was....well, just a cry for help, what's The Devil's Chair? How does this rate? Short and glib answer is that it doesn't, really: a team of psychology bods take a former asylum inmate (who's doing an extended Jason Statham impression) back to the place where he claims a mysterious chair took his girlfriend. Is that what happened? Is this chair really a portal to somewhere else? What's the bearded professor hiding? Who's going to get off with the blonde or the brunette? What's real? Is this a hallucination? Is this all in his head? They don't know, I don't know, Adam Mason doesn't bloody know either. It's one of those movies that suddenly keeps switching frames of reality on you. That's fine if all your frames of reality are equally valid, and all linked up (something like Total Recall, which is obviously a far more ambitious picture) but here it reaches the point that not only does the audience not know what's real, illusion or all in the mind, but that they don't care.

Matters are not improved by a constant voiceover from the substitute Statham which is mainly concerned with yelling abuse and obscenity at the viewer. Well, wow. Anyone can do that: poo willy bum knob wee wee farty knickers. Congratulations, you're officially nine years old.

And I'm fed up with the low-rent Haneke impression as well. While I'm not a fan of Michael Haneke (when I have to look up a film on the IMDb when I get home to see what it was about, as I did with Hidden/Cache, it's not a good thing) I'll acknowledge that he's some kind of proper artist. An artist I don't much like, but still an artist and, as an artist working in serious highbrow drama with Things To Say About Humanity And The World And Stuff, he can use the confines and conventions of a genre movie (a home-invasion thriller) to directly address the audience with his concerns about genre movie audiences - he can have people in Funny Games talk to the viewer about how morally questionable genre movies, and audiences, are. Because the Funny Games audience isn't really a genre audience, it's a Curzon Mayfair audience rather than a Cineworld Dagenham audience; it's a Prince Charles upstairs audience rather than a Prince Charles downstairs audience. BUT: Adam Mason is not any kind of artist - he's making genre moves, not art films, and genre directors DO NOT slag off genre audiences. Here's the quote off IMDb (bowdlerised for painfully obvious reasons:

Look at this poorly written, badly acted bull****! Is there any truth in this b-movie banality? No! No, there is no truth. Believe no one. Believe nothing. You freaks and geeks. You bloodthirsty morons, **** you! Bring on the red parade. So are there any pulses in the house? You deadbeat, midnight, freak-geek witted torture-porn gore horse! I know what you're looking for, so have it! Take it! and **** you all very much!

Gee, thanks for that, you hack. I was with you up until B-movie banality (though I didn't think it was actually as good as that). But since you think that anyone who actually bothers to rent your piss-pathetic excuse for an apology for a waste of an evening is a bloodthirsty moron and a deadbeat, you can take it and stick it. And take The Devil's Chair with you.
