I think downloading is basically an overegged sense of entitlement that means people can't understand the concept of having to wait for things. I'm totally agree that censorship is effectively dead in the modern age, as people can steal the uncut versions of films at will. That doesn't make it right to do so though.

Brilliant topic btw

The one part of Mr Greens post that I agree with more than any anti-piracy comments is that the internet has brought out the worst in people, totally totally agree. Making it practically free for everyone has brought out all the thieves, pirates, con artists, scammers etc. Try selling something of any value on ebay to see what I mean by that comment.

Now when I got online, untill a few years ago I used to download a lot of music illegally, be that thru bearshare, limewire, kazaa, winmx. I had a choice there was no denying that and on reflection I know that it was wrong. BUT when I wanted to buy a non chart album in say HMV, I was looking at £14-£20 just for one CD. Now they have competition from supermarkets, they can remarkably charge £8-£11 for an album. Whereas computer games went down after a few years as did the price of VHS/DVDS, CD prices for stuff that was a few years old was still sold at what I deemed a riduculously high price.

Now I don't believe in film downloads, not just because of the legal side of things but FF shows the people and the effort that goes into making films. Plus a new release may be £12 but a few months down the line £5-£8 is more likely and as someone said I like to have a copy that is my own.

BUT heres a point i'd like to make, if I want to buy a film thats been out a few months, does buying it second hand hurt the film industry. Ok someone has paid for it but instead of me going into HMV and buying it new, I buy my copy off ebay. Should films be allowed to be resold? Should there be a small percentage taken from the sale price and fed back into the industry??

No. The industry has been paid already. They've been paid by somebody else, but that somebody else doesn't have the film anymore.

Most people live in second-hand houses and drive second-hand cars.

Valid point Richard.

On that basis, as they have already paid once can I make a copy for you? Ok they don't get paid again but say I sell that disc on ebay and you buy it, they still don't get paid. There are still some grey areas in this respect. Personally, I'd still rather own the film, I like my film collection and it's something that i'm proud of, starting from very little to topping over 400 in just over 2 years.

At no point is piracy ok, it is stealing and in respect of music, if someone offered a service at say £30 p/month for music downloads then I would sign up today.

No, because then you have a copy and I have a copy, but they've been paid for one. :)

Spotify's premium service pretty much offers that already. Although if you look into the amount of the revenue that goes back to the artist it's pretty shocking.

I'm afraid it is always the little guy, the passionate guy, the one who sticks their neck out to produce something they care about and not just more "product" that gets shafted. It's strange that the rise of entitlement culture comes at a time when there are more legitimate outlets to see just about any film you want available (apart fro a few special case films like Serbian Film - and even it's future is not decided just yet). If you want to see it, pay for it, look at findanyfilm.com if you can't find it.

And here's another radical idea, if you don't want to see it, don't! Maybe then we can all see Frozen in a theatre and not Resident Evil 33.

was just about to mention spotify again. I think it's the greatest thing on the internet, that and youtube. I don't even have the premium service so it's completely free but with an advert every 5 songs or something. All the music you could ever want for free and it's not taking up any hard drive space.

if you look at the percentage of revenue artists take from CD sales it's abysmal. really really terrible and about the same as spotify. that's how i justify not paying for an album because I go to so many gigs and festivals a year, that's where artists really make their money.

talking of second hand DVDs and copying etc....
i wouldn't do this because I'm never that bothered about cuts but,
is it alright to download the uncut version of a film after you have bought the only version available in your country?

I would say that morally if you already bought the film in the only version currenlty available in your territory, it's unlikely that anyone is going to get to worked up about it.

Ed, if you've bought the cut copy, then someone has been paid for that. The uncut version you download will either be a screener, which you have no right to view, or a foreign upload which you haven't paid for. If you have to see the uncut version, then you have to buy an unrated R1.

This is getting away from the real point and turning into semantics now, but the simple answer is:

Did you pay for the film?

If so, it's yours (unless pirated, but let's not go there), if not, it isn't.

ah R1s, I wouldn't do it anyway, was just thinking out loud once again, I'm all about the semantics.

Like what if you fall asleep in the cinema, alright to sneak in next time?
Or if you worked on a film but they short changed you the cost of the film on dvd, alright to download?

those are both completely ridiculous.

I'm still torn whether I will be able to refrain from streaming the walking dead when it airs in america on halloween instead of waiting a week to watch it here. I know I'll be watching it again when it airs on fx and then buying the DVD.
actually I've just answered this one today and everyone here is refraining from watching them, we're having double bill screenings and beers every 2 weeks and it's going to be awesome
