I've ended up with a list of about 25 Can't Live Withouts, so my 10 out of them, in no particular order (as is traditional) are:

The Devils (Ken Russell - hurrah for the final DVD release!)
The Fly (Cronenberg)
Alien
Ringu
Don't Look Now (I know, it's sort of more of an atmospheric chiller, but I love it)
Hellraiser
The Thing (Carpenter)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
The Haunting (1963)
Event Horizon

And I would like honourable mentions for Rosemary's Baby, Candyman, The Orphanage, Scanners, [REC], Halloween and Prince of Darkness.

What happened about this poll in the end? I thought something was going to be unveiled at / just before the August event, but I have neither heard nor seen any update (unless I missed it of course!). I am interested to see what the top 100 looks like!
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

Not sure if this is too late, as I've only been lurking recently. I've tried to limit it to one title per director. In alphabetical order:

ALIEN
DAWN OF THE DEAD (Romero)
THE EVIL DEAD
THE EXORCIST *
OPERA
PAN'S LABYRINTH
THE THING (Carpenter)
TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME
VIDEODROME
THE WICKER MAN (Hardy)

* It's great, but it terrifies me too much ever watch it again.

Me too hopes this isn't too late but what the hell here goes:

1. The Thing (Carpenter)
2. A Nightmare On Elm St (Craven)
3. Alien (Scott)
4. Psycho (Hitchcock)
5. The Hitcher (Harmon)
6. Poltergeist (Hooper)
7. Halloween (Carpenter)
8. [REC] 2 (Plaza / Balaguero)
9. The Loved Ones (Byrne)
10. Red, White & Blue (Rumley)

Loads obviously missed off but there you go.

Funny you have to list directors because so many have been remade! :o
