just finished Mo Hayders RITUAL... meh... nowhere near as good as BIRDMAN and THE TREATMENT...
finished MILLENIUM-GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO... absolutely stunning... highly, highly recommended...so well written (Larsson is really great, sad loss) and truly compelling with a mouth wateringly satisfying conclusion... not often you get a great ending... can't wait for the second one in paperback this week... not cause I'm cheap and won't buy the HB but because the HB is just too damn big to lug around everywhere, which is what I will ineviatably have to do when it gets its hooks into me...
currently reading THE STRAIN-Chuck Hogan and Guilermo del Toro- really promising first half... fast paced, enjoyable and obviously written with the film trilogy in mind... hope it doesn't drop the ball in the second half but I have faith that it won't...

hmmmm... THE STRAIN... when Guillermo Del Toro creator of PAN'S LABYRINTH and DEVIL'S BACKBONE put's his name to something you genuinely expect it to be great... I did... but it wasn't...
Basically a sub-par dracula for the MTV generation by way of BLADE, BUFFY and THE STAND... Not keen on Chuck Hogan's (who by all accounts is meant to be really good) writing style... too bitty... and by the end of it I really did just want it all to be over... I've read a lot worse, I just think maybe for this one, mainly because of Mr Del Toro's name, my expectations were a little higher than usual... I'll probably get the next two of the trilogy when they appear but at the moment I'm not itching for them...

well then... on to MILLENIUM II:THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE... if it's half as good as the first one I'll be truly happy...

My GF recently finished 'The Strain', I'll start it soon.

She said the story started off really well but became a bit samey towards the end. Because it's part of a trilogy you know it's not going to be wrapped up at the end of this book.

Still, she'll probably be getting the next two books in the series.

MILLENIUM II:THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE... Absolutely brilliant, utterly compelling and constantly surprising follow up to GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO... I really didn't think Larsson could raise his game after the great first novel but he has. It's a superb, deliberately paced novel which once again hooks you in with it's stark, descriptive prose and carrot on a stick narrative. He's taken the two main characters off in very different directions this time and allowed Salander some breathing room to blossom into a far more interesting and multi-faceted character... The new characters that are introduced are on the whole very interesting with the stand out being Bublanski, the decorated cop on a mission to solve some grisly murders. I really liked the journey his character takes. The only disappointment for me is that a vast amount of plot threads are left unresolved and I now have to wait until October for the release of the final part of the trilogy THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNETS NEST...

Next up DROOD by Dan Simmons... Charles Dickens and Wilkie Smith by way of Sherlock Holmes apparently... hmmmm

Borders on Oxford Street has a closing down sale.

I managed to pick up a new hardback copy of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and a new paperback copy of 'Handling the Dead' for £1 each.

Loads of other books as well

Currently reading Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite. I normally go for sci fi so it's a bit of a change for me. Enjoying it so far.

I'm also halfway through I am a Cat by Natsume Sōseki, which I am really, really enjoying. I would definitely recommend it.

Teatro Grotessco by Thomas Ligotti. A prose-poetic writer who is the heir to Lovecraft and Poe. I never thought I'd come across a contemporary writer who could match those two gents but he does and then some. Think their darkest heart stuff distilled and you have an idea of the power imbuing Ligotti's stories. Also try his other collection My Work is Not Yet Done for corporate horror fiction that out-darkens American Psycho in its portrayal of soul-destroying restructures and business suit vacuity.

In other words, the work of this man rocks.

Just finished Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson. Has anyone read Green or Blue Mars and know if they're worth bothering with? I quite enjoyed this one until the last 50 pages or so. I was hoping the subsequent books don't continue as this one ended.

Slights by Kaaron Warren. It's a fictional memoir of a serial killer. I'm about 100 pages in and so far it's considerably less "gut-wrenching" than the back cover led me to believe. Has anyone else read it - does it get better?
