I slowly getting on top of this. Not quite there yet, but getting much better. It has been quite a nasty attack this time round.

They appear to be doing the rounds at the moment, the SGM site has suffered 2 serious attacks recently.

This is quite the longest and most sustained attack on the forum that I have seen. I have increased the security levels, and band the IP addresses that the attacks are coming from and yet still the spam comes. Not quite sure where to go with this next, so anyone has any ideas, please feel free to get in touch.

It seems to come in waves, at least that's what I see on other forums I admin.

There are no 100% countermeasures, but as a starting point (if you haven't already) introduce Q&A Captcha as detailed here: https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... &t=2122696

Also, as an aside, our forum at HorrorTalk hardly ever gets spammers as I placed it in the non-standard directory /_forum/ rather than the very common /forum/ or /board/

Yes, thanks for sorting it out and apologies if I sounded to terse in my initial rant.

I posted the thread when there was only about 5 spam threads, I looked in on Saturday to something like 15 pages of them, so no mean feat in sorting it out.

Famous last words, but I think this outbreak of spam is just about done. There is jut the odd post getting through. Other that to be a pain in the arse, what do these bottom feeders thing they are achieving. Perhaps I answered my own question.

Just had a spam PM from a user, ironically advertising Xrumer which is a program for auto-spamming forums.
