Shorts

THE AMAZING TROUSERS (11 minutes)
This was one of the best of the shorts (ironically) and up with League of Gentlemen for the Hammer pastiche. Who knew the bloke from the BT ads could act beyond family sitcom mode?

THE CHEST (5 minutes)
This deadpan piece seemed out of place. Style over something-or-other and not much beyond a desire to shock.

HE DIES AT THE END (4 minutes)
Very funny throughout. And a killer end.

PSYCHO HILLBILLY CABIN MASSACRE! (15 minutes)
A nice joke, perhaps overlong, but worth its weight in satire.

HOMEWORK (7 minutes)
Yeah so I had forgotten what Devoir meant.
Nice punchline and as an avowed cat hater, I enjoyed the cat sequence.

TOTAL FURY (12 minutes)
Joyously silly. GAWD BLEZZ AHNULD !

ANYONE THERE? (10 minutes)
A tad long for the sake of this joke, but nice to look at.

NORMAN J WARREN PRESENTS: HORRORSHOW (30 minutes)
Ahh the portmanteau of pastiches !

NEON KILLER - got the homage spot on and I didn't see the final "twist" on its way.
THE FLEA - oh, vampires ? I thought they were old people. Hammer TV show -esque.
THE INCURSION - another fair bait and switch tale.
THE INITIATION - wicker wicker wild west country tribute to Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee in a dress. Nice music too.
SMILE - meh. She was asking for it.

THE AMAZING TROUSERS (11 minutes)
Great performances and a fantastic storyline...had me laughing long after the credits had finished rolling.

THE CHEST (5 minutes)
Agree with the above poster, very out of place and in extremely bad taste.

HE DIES AT THE END (4 minutes)
Great idea and even pretty scary when you finally see the smiley papier mache thing at the end!

PSYCHO HILLBILLY CABIN MASSACRE! (15 minutes)
Could have been shorter but overall pretty funny and fairly gory.

HOMEWORK (7 minutes)
A cute little film which had some impressive computer imagery!

TOTAL FURY (12 minutes)
This is it...the funniest thing I have ever seen in my entire life! Me and my buddy were wiping tears away by the end...hell we were still giggling throughout the whole horrorshow thing! Best short by a million miles! 'If you are attacked by men wearing gas masks, here is what you need to do...oh never mind, commercials finished!' Oh god, I need to obtain a copy of this!

ANYONE THERE? (10 minutes)
Didnt really get it...wasnt very impressive to be honest!

NORMAN J WARREN PRESENTS: HORRORSHOW (30 minutes)
Now this was a huge stinker, every short shown within this montage of muck was utter guff! Crappily presented by Norman J Warren with a retard zombie which was about as funny as cancer running the projector, this collection was a complete waste of hype. They should have shown Total Fury on repeat for 30 mins...much more impressive!

THE AMAZING TROUSERS
Good story and very well played

THE CHEST
What the f**k was this about ? Sick & nasty little waste of space

HE DIES AT THE END
Great idea and very original. Worked well

PSYCHO HILLBILLY CABIN MASSACRE!
Good idea but a bit long - even had that crowd-pleaser nearly-naked-mud-wrestle-fer-the-lads

HOMEWORK
Nice - well executed and good effects

TOTAL FURY
Loved this one! Girlie in a short skirt goes Ahh-nold. Loved the whole thing especially the Commando theme playing throughout. Best short flick of the weekend.

ANYONE THERE?
Didnt really care if anyone was there to be honest

NORMAN J WARREN PRESENTS: HORRORSHOW
Ummm - didnt really think much of any of this - all a bit meh at best and a bit c**p at worse.

THE AMAZING TROUSERS
Great camp fun.

THE CHEST
Ridiculous attempt to shock with no story.

HE DIES AT THE END
Brilliant. Played very well with the Frightfest crowd and amazingly managed to make me feel quite tense while also making me laugh out loud. Loved it.

PSYCHO HILLBILLY CABIN MASSACRE!
A little long but good fun even though I guessed from the start where it was going.

HOMEWORK
Cute.

TOTAL FURY
Liked this. Actually did think it was going down a mini torture p*rn route so was very pleasantly surprised with where it went!

ANYONE THERE?
Bit dull.

NORMAN J WARREN PRESENTS: HORRORSHOW
Didn't really do it for me to be honest.

seemed like the funny shorts went down well but the darker, more serious ones left people cold. Strange, I thought FF was a horror festival, not a comedy one...

There was more reference to horror movies in the shorts rather than out and out horror (last year there were some excellent moments of horror) although gore is often funny in an Itchy and Scratchy way.

The one attempt at "dark" did not quite gel ... except the gel that was used for the baby's head.

I liked The Chest, but I didn't love it.

A bit of an explanation as to what in god's name was going on may have softened up some of those less enamoured with it.

The Chest

Postby Stephen with ph » Wed Aug 27, 2008 12:00 am

There have been times in Frightfests past when I've found myself asking "why am I watching this?".

I think back to how I felt sitting in front of The Living and The Dead or The Girl Next Door, both of them genuinely upsetting and as far from "entertainment" as I can imagine. But, in the final reckoning, heartfelt and moving experiences...

Watching "The Chest", I wondered why on earth somebody would make such a movie.

Any thoughts?

Seriously: this is not intended as an oblique criticism - I really don't understand why someone would do such a thing.
