A Serbian Film - PULLED from line-up
Re: A Serbian Film - PULLED from line-up
Very interesting discussions going on here. A few other festivals have expressed an interest in seeing if they can show the film uncut, including Grimm Up North (Manchester), Mayhem (Nottingham) and Horrorthon (Dublin). Will let you know how that pans out. We also have the Raindance request for screening it also in October.
We also still hope to stage a "Private Screening" of the uncut film in London, possibly in assocation with FrightFest before the end of this month. Again, more info as we confirm it.
Unfortunately I can't go into too much detail on the current situation as it is still sensitive, but we are trying all options to try and get the film screened uncut. We will be submitting the film for theatrical classification shortly, where it is hoped that there may be more leniency on the amount of cuts requested for DVD.
In the meantime, those of you who have seen the film will understand why this film is so problematic (although it has been confirmed that it does not break any Obscene Publication Laws, and ALL controversial scenes were filmed either with prosthetics or CGI). For those of you who haven't seen it, please try and refrain from downloading the currently available uncut film from the internet as we are working hard to bring the film legally to the UK in the most uncut manner possible.

Thanks for the update Rawshark, still hoping for a legitimate screening. And yes, please don't download independent films, you're not sticking it to the man, you're sticking it to the filmmakers.

Raindance would be good if the private screening does not come off.
Elliot Grove seems to like a controversy (though I think he was right to show House of Numbers last year, I think there were some misguided comments about its veracity) ... but it's still in Westminster )

The RAINDANCE line-up was announed this morning:
http://www.thefancarpet.com/NewsPage.aspx?n_id=1773Raindance continues to showcase controversial and extreme filmmaking from across the globe. This year holds no exception with an uncut screening of the much talked about A SERBIAN FILM, directed by Srdjan Spasojevic. An allegorical and controversial film widely criticised for its **spoiler** scenes, the film has been banned from a public screening and instead will be shown as a Private Screening.

Here's my article about the censorship themes at this year's festival ~ serbian film, ISOYG and the Video Nasties doc (with an astrological perspective):

Interesting piece here too...

Were currently corssing our fingers that the Raindance screening on Oct 8 will still be able to go ahead. Best to email Raindance to register interest in attendance if anyone would like to attend.
Also we may be able to confirm another uncut festival screening for October shortly as well...
If there is anyone out there wanting to help us show this film uncut, please PM me as we need the help and support at the moment and also feel free to write your own blogs / articles / opinions about the situation and post links up here too if you feel inclined to do so...

Hope you get some support from potential exhibitors Rawshark. For what it's worth I put all my thoughts about the 2011 FrightFest on my wife's blog (yes I am to disorganised/busy to do my own), including opinion on the Serbian affair:rawshark wrote:If there is anyone out there wanting to help us show this film uncut, please PM me as we need the help and support at the moment and also feel free to write your own blogs / articles / opinions about the situation and post links up here too if you feel inclined to do so...

FWIW: my most recent so-called "thoughts" about A Serbian Film are up on the FF blog page:

Re: A Serbian Film - PULLED from line-up
I saw A Serbian Film yesterday and I have to say I'm very, very happy we got to see Buried instead!
Aside from all the violence, that is not serving any purpose whatsoever, ASF just felt pretentious and drawn out, drifting into absurd terrain more often than not.
Also, after seeing it, I don't buy into the "but it is a comment on post war society in ex Yugoslavia" hype anymore. This movie has about as much to do with Serbia and ex Yugoslavia as Monsters has with Horror movies.
Buried on the other hand is in the top ten list of my alltime greatest movies and I'm really happy I saw it first on FF2010

Out of curiosity, nagelfar, where did you watch Serbian yesterday? I thought Raindance was the only place showing it in the near future...

Interesting. Does anyone know what the best online info is, regarding the filmmakers political intentions with this movie?nagelfar wrote:Also, after seeing it, I don't buy into the "but it is a comment on post war society in ex Yugoslavia" hype anymore. Re: A Serbian Film - PULLED from line-up
I do have lots of links to various interviews with the filmmakers, but not to hand and I'm away for the next 3 days, so I can post them here when I get back. The Youtube clip of the Q&A after the SXSW screening is interesting - the writer Aleksander is very erudite about what the script was trying to achieve (he's also wrote the critically-acclaimed Tears for Sale too).
As for future screenings, we hope to be announcing some uncut screenings of the film next week for later in October and November, so again, please try to not see the film in unofficial environments...
