The 2011 FILM4 FrightFest All Nighter - Livid

Post by iomega » Sat Oct 29, 2011 8:14 am

Julien Maury & Alexandre Bustillo the co-directors of our Halloween FrightFest 2007 hit Inside, return with what is probably one of the nights most anticipated films livid. Did it live up to your expectations?

Deliciously freaky and intense, with stunning cinematography - but unfortunately it didn't always make a whole lot of sense, at least to me. The old house was suitably unsettling and creepy, while it was good to see some strong female characters. Like a dreamlike fairytale - or should that be a nightmare?! But there were too many elements that were not fully explained to make the film wholly satisfying. 8.5 / 10
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

Although not as good as their breakthrough film Inside, this was an excellent choice.

One of the creepiest haunted houses we have seen on film for a while, and although not everything is explained, it works well as a dark fairytale of the Del Toro type.

My Favourite film of the evening.

Livid was excellent - superbly shot and goes in a direction you don't expect. A must see film.

Unfortunately I dropped off a couple of times in it, so I didn't get the full storyline, but from what I watched, it was easily the film of the night. I loved Inside, and this was a very different movie, but still almost as good. Can't wait to get this as soon as it comes out and watch it in full.

Loved this one! The ending was a little flaky but the rest was superb. Great build up, amazing set, wonderful acting. Creepy, frightening, claustrophobic and weird!

Now this film really impressed me and had a genuine creepiness to it.
Some fine acting by the cast made this something special.
Totally different than Inside but no less satisfying.
Definitely going to purchase this when released.
My rating 5/5

Liked it a lot, but I don't think it's a classic, and could have done without the visually more fantastical elements.

From your review,

"...any film describes as "Argento Meets Fulci" is obviously going to be more interesting as a film billed as "D'Amato Meets Winner" or "Bay Meets Olen Ray". Sadly it doesn't live up to the comparison."

I agree. In fact, I was thinking more Mario Bava, as this is clearly inspired by one of his BLACK SABBATH segments.
