I was dubious about the new comedy approach going into the film, but I thought this solo effort by Paco Plaza worked pretty well. The humour was well pitched and fitted in nicely with the more traditional action and horror. The new location also made an attractive and welcome change from the appartment block. We await to see where the final instalment takes us. 7.5 / 10

I think its a bold but right move to take a franchise off in a different direction. What's the point in repeating what was done (albeit very WELL done) in the first 2 films? One of my favourites of the fest and I thought the comedy elements were spot on 9 / 10

The 'point' would be to keep the loyal fan base its worked so hard to obtain.

Some horrors should not have the comedy element. The shining, The Exorcist, The Omen etc etc I place Rec in this category. To do so has now completely ruined it.

Good stand alone film but i wont consider it part of the franchise. Just as i dont consider Quarantine 2 (AKA Zombies on a plane) as anything to do with it.

It was an often funny but unremarkable way to pass 1.5 hours. Well made but nothing I haven't seen a 100 times before.

As a previous post as stated, I haven't seen the first two REC's and I'm not a massive fan of the found footage sub-genre either.

As a stand alone movie I thought it was very entertaining and I did like the way not only did the get rid of the cam-footage after 20mins but also gave a small nod to 'night-vision' with about 2 mins of that before booting that too.

All talk is that REC4:Apocalypse will indeed treat Genesis as a stand-alone and will be back with hand-held.

Entertaining and chucklesome, but I feel, as is being touched upon in other threads, symptomatic of the type of films we had at FF13 this year.

Superb addition to the series. Really enjoyed this one, went from being another found footage film to changing back to normal Liked that in the background you could see these men leaping over balconies and the start of the mayhem.

Think REC3's an interesting film and will be great to see where Jaume Balaguero goes with [REC]4. There's a couple of interviews at the festival with the director Paco Plaza and Leticia Dolera

i think REC4 already got a cinema release, its called the 3 stooges. Seems this is the direction everyone wants it to go in.

Not true, Sleep Tight man said REC4 would return to pure horror, no laughs when he was asked about it during his Q&A :P

I'm not sure it was "right" to take the [Rec] series in this direction, and got the impression from Jaume Balaguero's comments after Sleep Tight that he probably wasn't too impressed....

But what the hell, as a stand-alone film I thoroughly enjoyed it. We've seen a lot of horror-comedies the last few years but (IMO) they very rarely get the balance right. This one did.

I loved this. Funny and entertaining. A perfect fit for a FrightFest.

Can see why fans of 1 and 2 may not like the direction but then some people didn't like Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness because it wasn't Evil Dead.

In fact I'm going to buy this as I've just made myself want to watch it again.

I didn't catch the film at Fright Fest having already seen it at another festival at the beginning of the year but heres a random snap of Paca Plaza signing autographs after the FrightFest screening.

Great film, adored it and yes it totally deviates from the first two. I also liked Halloween 3 even though it didn't have Michael Myers in it.

What would have been the point in just doing REC 1 and 2 again? Ditching that damnable found-footage schtick is the best thing the series could do - it's a lame gimmick that's long past its expiry date and doesn't work anywhere near as well as the makers seem to think it does. REC 3 is a film: beautifully shot, enjoyable, funny, and you give a damn about the characters. What on Earth would have been the point in just doing REC 1 and 2 again?
