Saturday in main screen. Thoughts?

Post by digitalsoul »

So this will be my first time attending Frighfest and have a Saturday day pass, but am thinking about getting a couple of tickets for films in the discovery screens because at least half the films in the main screen look like they might not be so great. Hammer of The Gods, R.I.P.D and Frankenstein's Army I've seen get trashed in both the mainstream and specialist press. Is anyone feeling positive about these films?

On the flip I'm looking forward to The Hypnotist, No one Lives and Cheap Thrills. I've already booked a ticket for Willow Creek instead of Frankenstein's Army, but not sure yet if I'll do likewise for Hammer of The Gods and R.I.P.D as the day starts getting crazy expensive at that point.

What are other people thoughts out there to the Main Screen films on the Saturday?

I've got a feeling that Hammer of the Gods will surprise people. RIPD could go either way, popcorn fun or total crap, low expectations will hopefully produce a pleasant surprise. Frankenstein's Army looks like a fun monster mash, I'm looking forward to that.

I've seen some of Cannon Fodder (Disco alternative to Hammer of the Gods) and it was OK, but I wasn't giving it my full attention so it would be unfair to judge either way.

No One Lives is great, a real crowd-pleaser. Cheap Thrills looks like it might be one of those endurance tests with lots of nasty stuff happening and much sobbing and suffering.

Not sure about The Hypnotist, might be a Nordic misery title. Overall I'd say Saturday looks pretty bloody good. :)

Looking forward to getting the night bus on my own into Brixton after that one then!

I only just realised from this thread that "Stalled" had been moved from it's original time on the timetable...
I really wanted to see that, and thought I would have to miss bound-to-be-guilty-pleasure of "Frankie's Army". :)
Now I can skip "The Hypnotist" and I don't feel so bad about that... although it looks interesting.

Must admit, I'm regretting sticking up for RIPD after some of the news and clips from the USA showings, But it has got Bridges-Parker-Bacon in the cast!
Feel a bit "meh" about "Hammer of the Gods" when I saw the trailer months and months ago, and really haven't shifted from that.

However, really looking forward to "No One lives" and "Cheap Thrills"...

Im not sure yet what to do about R.I.P.D. Everything ive heard about it suggests its an awful failure of a movie, but neither of the disco alternatives are grabbing me particularly either. Might use that slot to go and eat.

Actually the more I look at the Hypnotist the less I think I want to see it as the first film of the day. Am thinking Stalled a far better way to start the day, although its looking like my day pass may not even get used now until 6.00!

Frankenstein's Army looks like a lot of fun to me - the reviews I've read seem mostly positive too

Looks like an interesting day, the big decision for me is whether to see The Hypnotist or try to see Stalled. Haven't heard anything about The Hypnotist or seen any trailers, looks interesting from the write up, but Stalled looks very funny and one of the better Discovery screen films...decisions, decisions.

I think Frankenstein's Army may be a surprise though, it's getting some good reviews:

I agree Hammer Of The Gods looks bad, both the Discovery Screen options look better, so hopefully I'll get a ticket to either Cannon Fodder or Clophill.

No One Lives looks very good and may be one of the unexpected highlights of the weekend imo.

R.I.P.D. looks pretty dire, but the Discovery Screen alternatives don't look great, so I'll have to give it a chance!

Cheap Thrills looks okay and again, may turn out to be an unexpected gem.

The guys from Stalled posted on their Facebook page that there are only six tickets remaining for the Saturday 24th screening, so the likelihood of getting one on the day seems slim. :(

Alternative is Monday at 6.40pm or if it happens to show in Frightfest Extra.

But surely that's the general release ticket sales rather than those for pass holders? For all the Discovery screen films there's about 30 tickets held back that are for weekend pass holders that are only available on the day of the screening...that's the way its been every other year, and I can't image it being different this year.

Ive just bought my ticket for stalled anyway, dont want to risk missing it and the hypnotist looks too slow and dreary for 10.30 in the morning. Feel like starting the day with some laughs!

I must say, I'm getting a touch of the "WTF's!!" about some of the disco announcements. I was under the same impression as yourself Wolfshade (are we related?) and was steeling myself to get up early on a couple of days, to get my tickets under my festival pass for "Stalled" and "Wither" at least... but if the seats are already limited (is it just 30 set aside for pass-holders?!) I'm a tad worried now.
Are some people buying day tickets on top of their passes, to ensure getting a seat?! That doesn't seem right on several levels and certainly didn't occur to me....
Not too sure how the "extra" screenings are going to work yet either. Might be forced into main-screen only mode...

Must stay calm ... ... must stay calm ... :o ... *breathes into paper bag* ... all will be well, it'll all work out .... *counts to 10* ... and breathe...

I've bought extra tickets on top for Stalled and Willow Creek, but not buying any more as Ive already decided to give Willow Creek a miss in favour of Frankies Army, but the day is going to get mucho expensive at this rate. I've got almost zero interest in RIPD or the Viking thing, but am going to wait for the day to see if I can get disco tickets for those slots, if not so be it.

Going to try and get a refund or exchange on my Willow Creek ticket, but if not I'll have a spare going on the day.

Granted, yes, but with only six left out of the salable tickets it means that the chances of a pass-holder getting a ticket is much reduced.

I wouldn't use the mainstream press as a guide to what is worth seeing and not seeing. I remember The Hills Have Eyes 2 being totally trashed and I ignored the critic as I usually do, if he/she is obviously one that doesn't like the horror genre. You can pretty much tell from the first few sentences when you read what they have to say, that they don't dig horror movies generally. Which begs the question why bother reviewing something you don't like before you've even started! I saw HHE 2 and enjoyed it for what it was - gory horror entertainment. The horror press might be a better guide because they love the genre, but even then, I often find some movies are hyped more than they deserve.

I also saw a video on youtube with a guy and girl reviewing 'The Haunter' and quite frankly as soon as they said that' 'Splice' was a great movie and other inane shite, I thought no, you aren't a horror movie lover like people I know, who can judge things fairly and constructively, who have decent taste and a sense of fun about the whole experience - you're just pretenders trying to be trendy and therefore YOUR ANNOYING AS F**K :-

Don't get me wrong, Im not entirely sure about the Haunter myself judging from the trailer, but I would say watch the trailers to get the best feel for the movies.
