Barbara Crampton will make your skin crawl in horror-thriller Replace

Re-Animator star Barbara Crampton is on a full-bore roll at the moment, thanks to her appearances in last year’s acclaimed We Are Still Here and the upcoming films Sun Choke (out in theaters on Aug. 5) and Beyond the Gates (which screens at the upcoming L.A. Film Festival), among other projects. Indeed, the actress recently wrapped another movie, called Replace. Directed by firsttime filmmaker Norbert Keil, this horror-thriller stars Rebecca Forsythe (We Are Your Friends) as a young woman who is afflicted with a strange disease. When she starts to age rapidly, she discovers that she can replace her own skin with the flesh of others to maintain her beauty. In addition to Forsythe and Crampton, Replace stars Lucie Aron and Sean Knopp, while the script was written by Keil and Richard Stanley, the director of Hardware and Dust Devil.

Indie horror Lilith's Awakening was being presented at Cannes. Directed by Monica Demes under the mentorship of David Lynch, it's a psychological horror art film that tells the story of Lucy, a sexually repressed woman trapped in a loveless marriage and a dead-end job at her father’s service station in a small Iowa town. The highlight of her existence comes at night, when she dreams of a mysterious and beautiful woman who haunts the woods outside her modest home. One night, a mechanic who works for her father forces himself on Lucy, awakening in her an uncontrollable dark force. When he makes her promise to meet him later at his hideaway in the woods, it may be the girl of “her dreams” – not his – who shows up for the fateful rendezvous.

The Cannes postcards seem to have stopped, so here's a compilation of all films mentioned, in categories according to how much possibility I think it has of turning up (made more difficult this year because a lot of them just got a namecheck).

High Possibility
DOWNHILL (Patricio Valladres) - Introduced by Alan at Cannes. He describes it as “BMX BANDITS goes HP Lovecraft”. From Patricio Valladares, whose "Hidden in the Woods" played Frightfest a few years ago.
DETOUR (Chris Smith) - Dark noir. The Frightfest guys loved it, and Chris Smith has had several films at Frightfest before.
THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS (Colm McCarthy) - British film set after a zombie apocalypse. A favourite of Alan's, and McCarthy's previous feature, Outcast, was on the Discovery Screen in 2010.

Moderate Possibility
PLANET OF VAMPIRES (Mario Bava) - A new 4K restoration version of the Bava film, introduced by Nicholas Winding Refn. Would fit right in to one of the Discovery Retro screenings.
47 METERS DOWN (Johannes Roberts) - Roberts attended Glasgow Frightfest with his film "The Other Side of the Door"
AMOK (Vardan Tozija) - a bloody Macedonian film "a mix of FIGHT CLUB and SCUM"
WE ARE THE FLESH (Emiliano Rocha Minter) Controversial Mexican movie
RAW / GRAVE (Julia Ducournau) - One of Shelagh's two highlights.
THE HANDMAIDEN (Chan-wook Park) - The other of Shelagh's two highlights.
TRAIN TO BUSAN (Yeon Sang-ho) - Korean zombies on a train film. Ian talked positively about it.

Some Possibility
PERSONAL SHOPPER (Olivier Assayas) - Ghost story starring Kristen Stewart. Critically acclaimed, though divisive, but its prestige trappings make it look like something that would go to the LFF, especially with it's Cannes Best Director award.
TERROR 5 (Sebastian Rotstein, Federico Rotstein) - Anthology of urban legends Screened in the Blood Window and invited to the Fantaspoa Fantastic Festival.
ELLE (Paul Verhoeven) - Frightfest guys attended a Private screening.
MUSE (Jaume Balaguero)
SADAKO VS. KAYAKO (Kōji Shiraishi) - The Ring/Grudge crossover.
I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER (Billy O’Brien)

She Who Must Burn was screened at Dead By Dawn this year and it's absolutely dire. Truly one of the worst films of the year. It tries to make a statement about religious fanaticism and the oppression of women but is so heavy handed, filled with unbelievable situations, over the top characters and awful dialogue that you can't take it seriously. Not even enjoyable on a so bad it's good level. Please don't show this one gents!

From all of the various Twitter updates this year sounds like it is going to be the best yet.

I'm more than happy to put my faith in the picks by the staff, lots of films in previous years I would never have heard of or seen had it not been for Frightfest.

I am secretly hoping DON'T BREATHE is on opening night though.
