Films for FrightFest 2016

Post by bacchus »

Perhaps a bit early, but what films would you like to see at FrightFest this August? Again it's a bit early in the festival calendar to say what you'd like to see given that there are still some huge festivals between now and August, but so far I like the look of:

DON'T BREATHE
Just premiered at SXSW. Home invasion thriller about a group of people that break into a large house occupied by a blind man (Stephen Lang) who holds a secret. Sounds great!

P.O.V
Not yet released. Stars Shauna MacDonald (THE DESCENT, HOWL). Currently in post-production. A woman survives a car accident and is left paralysed, convinced that an evil presence inside her hospital room is trying to kill her. Good contender for world/european premiere.

CARNAGE PARK
Premiered at Sundance. Two bank robbers and their hostage are stalked across a remote piece of land owned by a skilled vietnam-vet marksman.

HUSH
About a deaf woman stalked in her home. Premiered at SXSW.

THE WOODS
Not yet released. Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett's next film (director and writer of THE GUEST and YOU'RE NEXT). About a group of students who discover they are not alone on a camping trip. This would be perfect for a world/europe/UK premiere as it's currently in post-production.

What would you like to see?

Three I think have a good chance:

HERETIKS - Paul Hyett's Jacobean horror about woman taken to repent in a sinister monastery. They showed a clip of this at Glasgow Frightfest just like they did with HOWL last year, so it has a good chance of turning up.

THE GREASY STRANGLER - A bad taste exercise about a grease covered serial killer and his son. Something of a hit at the Sundance midnight screenings, and apparently memorably depraved. It's from Elijah Wood's production company, and he was here in person for the Cooties screening last year, so he seems to have a good relationship with Frightfest.

SWISS ARMY MAN - Comedy where Daniel Radcliffe is a farting corpse used and abused by Paul Dano. Another film from the Sundance midnight screenings. I would love it if this turned up with Radcliffe as a guest.

There is always usually one or two films that are ultra hyped throughout the year at various festivals. Some get picked for FrightFest others don't for various logistical reasons.

2013 - You're Next
2014 - The Guest, The Babadook
2015 - It Follows, The Witch, The Hallow
2016 - ????

The early contender for this year seems to be DON'T BREATHE which has had almost unanimous praise since premiering at SXSW.

Some other films that were mentioned in past Frightfest postcards but still haven't turned up:

SKYSHARKS - Zombies on flying sharks. There was a lot of excitement around this in the Frightfest postcards from Cannes last year. I seem to remember that a scene for this was being filmed at last year's Frightfest, so it's probably a lock.

Films that are unreleased or in post-production, but are from high-profile genre directors:
COLOSSAL - Anne Hathaway in a Nacho Vigalondo giant monster film.
MUSE - Supernatural thriller from Frightfest regular Jaume Balaguero.
LEATHERFACE - Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury's addition to the TCM franchise
ELLE - home invasion thriller from Paul Verhoeven
A MONSTER CALLS - IMDd plot synopsis is: "A boy seeks the help of a tree monster to cope with his single mom's terminal illness.", and Liam Neeson is the tree monster! J.A. Bayona also directed The Orphanage, and there's a lot of talent on this one. Could be this year's Babadook.

From the Fantastic Fest postcards:
THE BLACK COAT'S DAUGHTER - Previously titled "FEBRUARY", girls get possessed at a boarding school
DARLING - a stylish homage to the psychological thrillers of the 1960s and 70s.
THE SIMILARS - "a Mexican tribute to The Twilight Zone from director Isaac Ezban."
SENSORIA - "low-key supernatural mystery."

From the 2015 Cannes postcards:
I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER - "a teenage boy hunting down a supernatural murderer"
DEMON HOLE - "a horror comedy about a fracking crew drilling on an ancient Native American burial ground"
SWEET HOME - Home-invasion. Paul: "reasonable and a bunch more besides". (has been released in some territories, but still possible)
SEOUL STATION - South Korean animated zombies. Paul: "enjoyable enough".
DEMENTIA - Only one mention in the opening postcard that it was on the screening schedule
DEEP DARK - ditto
BUNKER OF THE DEAD 3D - 3D found footage zombies.

And from the 2015 Berlinale postcards:

EVEN LAMBS HAVE TEETH - Spit on Your Grave riff with two protagonists
ANGELICA - from the director of Teeth; Jena Malone is a Victorian lady who manifests a supernatural sexual predator.
IT CAME FROM THE DESERT - mutant ants
BLACKBURN
INTO THE DEEP
ATTACK OF THE LEDERHOSENZOMBIES

ANOTHER WORLD - yet another Israeli zombie flick
BLOOD RANSOM - Twilight-style vampire saga

Hush coming to US Netflix on 8th April 2016

Maybe a tad too early a release for FF in August?

That said, director Mike Flanagan has another film, BEFORE I WAKE slated for release this year (also 8th April) but not clear whether that's going to be a theatrical or home entertainment release.

In fact two scenes were filmed at FrightFest last year for SKYSHARKS, however, don't expect the film in the lineup for this year. The second scene was filmed quietly in the alleyway next to the cinema in which Paul, Greg and myself were eating by one of the sharks.

The film still hasn't been made as the producers are currently rounding up the final financing. Look towards 2017 for this one.

I hope that's a typo for 'eaten' and we're not going to be treated to you guys troughing sandwiches while standing beside a shark. :D

Patient Zero maybe - Matt Smith and Natalie Dormer could be rather popular if they made it I imagine? :)

Bloody Disgusting posted a teaser trailer today for a new film starring Robert Englund, Nightworld: http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/33834 ... -key-hell/

Currently in post production according to IMDB, so perhaps ready for a festival release come August?

Another film...

THE WAITING (starring James Caan and Keir Gilchrist from It Follows).

About a couple of guys that rig their neighbours house to slam doors/open windows etc to freak him out, but discover he holds a secret in the basement. Or something like that. Sounds a bit like Disturbia.

This pretentious mess was the only film I walked out of in the whole of last year including six separate festivals. Beyond awful, and so noisy you can't even sleep through it (God knows, I tried).
