I loved the festival, it was the best experience in my life. The people were so friendly, the guests were down to earth and easy to talk to, I got to meet Kane Hodder AND Adam Green AND got a bunch of signatures the first time I was able to go, the atmosphere was great and there were some great films playing. It was honestly perfect for me, it makes you feel at home. I definitely wanna try and make it an annual thing to look forward to for myself. Can't wait to see what next year has in store.

Although I noticed that lots of people leave as soon as the film finished, which made me feel sorry for the film makers, for me the best bit is to have that interaction with them, and considering that we were all on the same timetable not sure where they were all going.
Going to the pub probably! Speaking for myself, I would only duck out of Q&A if it was a film I really hadn't enjoyed - in that case, I wouldn't be too interested in listening to a discussion of the film and instead would prefer to maximize break time, which is normally pretty tight. I do tend to stay for most Q&As though as it's one of the big draws of a festival like this.

I'm from Birmingham so have not been able to do a full weekend yet due to cost/time off from work. This year I made it to the Saturday and Sunday.

Just stuck to the Arrow screen for both days.

Good things for me...Double Date and Victor Crowley were excellent. I loved the Arctic blast from the air conditioning too :) Generally the films were decent...only Jackals and the awful The End? I didn't enjoy. Got to hear from some really enthusiastic film makers. Just a shame there is not enough time to hear from them.

Negatives....subtitled films when you are in row D are really tough. Early in the day not so bad but I had to give up on The Villainess due to tired eyes. My fault perhaps as I put an aisle seat as my top priority when choosing.
Not that it really mattered as the screen was never more than half full and silent as a library (which tbh I enjoyed...tho a bit of noise for Crowley would've been good) Leg room was no issue for me as I only sat next to someone for one film sadly. So much for a sell out.

But overall it was a positive experience. Now I've bought a flat and have money again I'll be doing the whole weekend next year. Hopefully in the main screen I'll get the "real" Frightfest experience!
Have already booked hotels for Halloween and Glasgow too so I'll be a veteran in no time.

I enjoyed it mostly.
As some people have already said, the festival could have been better with more horror films. I was fine with the horror comedies but honestly I wouldn't call Mayhem or The Villainess horror films. Didn't take away from my experience, but it was notable.

I need to pick up on all this bemoaning at the lack of horror films included in this years event. Straight from day one FrightFest has always included a wide range of films. Just have a look at the festival's Wikipedia page. We strongly believe that it is this breadth of content that has allowed the festival to grow over the years and is now by far the U.K.'s largest genre film-based event.

The genre industry goes in cycles and FrightFest reflects these cycles. One year we are flooded with zombie films, the next it's serial killers and this year it was a lot of comedy horror.

The bemoaners need to get over it and open their eyes to a whole world of genre product that might not fit into their box, but perish the thought, if they actually sat down and watched they might like.

Very well said, Ian. FrightFest has always been about a wide range of genre films so it totally baffles me that people are suddenly moaning about it. Why is The Villainess any less worthy than a previous FrightFest movie like Oldboy. Both clearly fall under the 'genre' label, as do all the horror comedies from this year.

Personally, I'd much rather watch 25 good horror comedies over a weekend than several average 'straight' horror movies. And there were plenty of non-comedies if you chose your path through the main screen and discovery screens carefully to suit your individual tastes this year. That's what the choice of screens is for, surely!

Thankfully, I think you'll find that the moaners are a tiny minority of this year's audience as, certainly from my experience and several people's who I spoke to throughout the festival, this was by far the strongest line-up of films that FrightFest has had for some years. And that's really saying something.

Speaking for myself, I've always pegged FrightFest as a genre festival, especially for the last few years.

The moans aren't aimed at the festival, there are countless threads about guessing the lineup and wondering which films will [s]be nicked[/s] play BFI instead; the moans if anything are at the general malaise in the horror genre when it comes to doing anything that isn't THE thing to do at the time and the general cyclical nature of it all.

Variation is the spice of life.

Two sides of the same coin.

Almost a year late with another reply to this, but as 2018 FF is just around the corner, its got me sniffing around for horror stuff.

Just wanted to say that it would be nice if there was am actual signing event, maybe a half hour slot shoved somewhere in the schedule so people can get some signatures.

I had an awesome Jason picture that a comic book artist friend of mine drew for me that I wanted Kane Hodder to sign, but as I was in the middle of one of the back rows, I couldn't get out fast enough to get to the crowd around Kane, let alone get to Kane before he was dragged off somewhere.

Depending on the guests this year, I'll have to try and book seats on the aisles so ill have a fighting chance to get a signature!
