The Laplace's Demon

Post by Alex J »

This wouldn't normally be my cup of tea - a black and white arthouse movie with a very old-fashioned feel, even though it is actually set in the present day - but I really liked it! Whilst mathematical formulae have featured in other genre movies, this felt fresh, while chess references were also well applied in this fiendish and intriguing mystery with menace. Not a film for everyone, but if you're looking for something more cerebral you may find lots here to enjoy. 8 / 10
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

No gore, but tense and menacing. Shooting it in black and white gave it a period feel despite the modern tech on show. Can't say much without spoilers but if you are familiar with the story which must have inspired this, then it's a fab take on it.

Actually my film of the festival this one. I’m a sucker for this kind of self-contained and claustrophobic thriller. It was so intricately put together it seemed to me like something Christopher and Jonathon Nolan might make.

Such a shame so few others seem to have seen it however :(
