Uwe Boll's In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale is a Lord of the Rings knock-off... and very boring it is too.

Loads of famous faces - with Jason Statham playing a farmer called Farmer

... and everything you'd expect in this type of movie... but I found it very unengaging.

The sweeping long-shots are fantastic - but when we cut close to action it all looks a bit cheap.

The Cirque du Soleil swinging on the vines were good!

The assasination of jesse james by the coward robert ford.
a superb film well played & acted by all,Brad Pitt really is more than just a pretty face & is easily one of the finest actors of his generatation,casey affleck plays his part incredibly well,a suprising film of class & quality.
Atonement
anything thats a period drama usually has me running the other way,and this did exactly the same at the cinema,when faced with say a horror flick or this horror always wins out,but this was just superb,keira & james acted so well,just goes to show how jealousy and secrets can ruin lives & the dunkirk scenes were done at grimsby in Lincolnshire.
ps i still have the jane austen book club to watch,and free tickets to gone baby gone on tuesday night

Bunch of stuff over the weekend...

Of most interest to Frightfesters is a new brit horror flick called Mum and Dad which I saw a preview copy of. It's a surbuban London take on torture-porn that has overtones of the Fred and Rose West case (in the way that Wolf Creek and Chainsaw have overtones of Peter Falconio and Ed Gein), it's nowhere near the class of those two, it's let down by some iffy acting and a tone that wavers uncertainly between brutal realism and gallows humour. However it is a worthy addition to the genre and has a few nasty twists all of it's own. Think Hostel being run by the Royle Family if you want a lazy poster quote. The Daily Mail is likley to go into meltdown over it if it gets a cinema release. I'd think this is a good bet for a future Frightfest appearence.

Then, Freidkin's Bug, which I liked a lot. It's more a psychological horror film than the body horror the trailer suggests (closer to Repulsion than Shivers) and the acting is very good. If I had a criticism it's that it never really escapes it's obvious stageplay origins.

Last and least I tried to watch Richard Kelly's follow up to Donnie Darko Southland Tales but only lasted half an hour, it's complete and utter drivel and the dawning realisation that it was 144 minutes long was too much to bear.

Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Storey - pretty darn good
Out of the Blue - enthralling
Call of the Cthulu - interesting

Still got to watch that one where Ryan Gosling is a smackhead teacher.

I have a rather lovely Indiana Jones Trilogy Box Set, a lovely Korean-origin pressing with exquisitely textured special packaging including a pretty fantastic, solid brass replica of the 'Staff Of Raa' amulet. It's a thing of great beauty and something I'm proud to have in the collection.

I was therefore rather arsed-off to discover, upon awakening Sunday morning, that someone had decided to piss all over it.

Imagine my further annoyance upon realising that the culprit was none other than Steven Spielberg and his deeply shitty new film.

4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days - very slow to start but gets better as it goes along - not quite as good as some of the reviews suggest but works well as a 4 star Romanian companion piece to Vera Drake!

Superhero Movie was, as expected, a laugh free zone... although some morons in the audience lapped it up.

Remember, I sat through this piece of sh*t so that you don't have to make the same mistake. Don't say I didn't warn you...

Oh Dear! Superhero Movie to avoid like the plague then........

Went to see Se.x and the City last night. For a film where at most i saw 2 incomplete episodes. It was rather enjoyable. Seeing it as a standalone film did not lessen the enjoyment.

Not generally a film i see but Amicus Fan - who is my chap- wanted to see it.

Had humour and some naughty moments. Hearing almost a roomful of women collective"aarring" and "sighing". Priceless.

I actually really enjoyed Sex and the City (having not seen much of the series, and being repremanded by my "Samantha"-wannabe friend that I probably don't like the series much because I dont understand the characters.. yeah right!!

Although a little shallow and simple in terms of humour and plot development, overall it was a feel good film that no doubt millions of girls will refer to when they find themselves unlucky in love!

There's only so much blame (admittedly quite a bit -- the script, the tacky over-reliance on CGI) that 'The Beard/Neck' can take on this. Spielberg won't do any thing he doesn't want to, no matter who the producer is (this muted tussle has been detailed online quite extensively in this years coverage of the picture, I think). And unfortunately that doesn't exclude: directing in his sleep; drawing deeply ponderous performances out of a clearly uninspired cast; providing the least thrilling set pieces of his career - including Hook - and generally phoning in a picture which I'm quite certain will be eclipsed by this year's The Mummy 3.

I saw a Korean picture recently, shot on at least a fifth of the budget of Spielberg's which included a sustained 20 minute desert chase that's more thrilling, inventive and breathless than the entire 2 hour minute running time of Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.

As a rabid fan of Spielberg (down to really liking supposed non-classic stuff like Amistad, A.I. Minority Report and even The Lost World) it pains me to say it, but he's made his Escape From L.A. here.

will let you know what i think when i see it tomorrow.
i also really like Amistad,it hardly ever got a look in at cinemas,the lost world is tremendous fun,AI is great,minority report i never really warmed to it,but theres an actor whos been in so many B-movie action flicks as a baddie henchman, hes acting next to tom cruise in a spielberg movie,and for that i like it and that alone!
Patrick Kilpatrick is his name & just goes to show even the B-movie guys get a chance with top directors & actors
