This one had some good moments, more than the original, but monica potter can play the sinister mother to save her life! The kills were very mediocre and empty. And the FINAL kill. That should never be seen by anyone EVER!

The ending is very very similar to the 'amityville remake' as in escape by boat.

I wouldn't call it 'torture porn' and lump it in with the others, but it's not really worth going to the cinema for.
I'm really interested to see this, as someone was saying the rape scene is horrific, but all other reviews have been meh. Have to see Antichrist when it comes out, as I've been told its Lars on top form.
Yeah, the 'rape' scene is quite edgy. Infact the whole scene where that and the killing of her friend is quite edgy, almost phallic in some ways.

It is. It's not a typical giallo, so keep an open mind...but it's fabulous.
you were right. quite pioneering really.
you can see where sean cunningham got his inspiration for friday the 13th. the two people having sex and being harpooned. classic.

Drag me to Hell - very simple, cool horror. Nicely hokey in tone but never at the expense of jumps and scares (except for the seance scene which is a bit rubbish).

JCVD - I've watched far, far too many Van Damme films in my time (personal fave - AWOL) so maybe I'm a tad biased, but hats off to the lad for trying something fresh. And he totally nails that monologue.

Saw V - ...please....stop...making....these.

For some unexplained reason, I agree to watch Mirrors on dvd...even though I walked out on it at FF last year......still appalling in every way possible.

Where is that damn Dalorian...I need those 6 hours back, sorry, did I say 6...well, that's what it felt like!

Kiefer has indeed sold his soul.
Its a trick. Get an axe.

Well, me and Gav just got back from seeing Doghouse at the Cineworld in Nottingham and I have to say be both absolutely LOVED it !!

I'll admit straight off to being a huge Jake West fan, so I may be a bit biassed. Having said that, the whole audiance seemed to be laughing as much as we were, and at all the right points, pretty much throughout the whole film.
At £2M, Jake had about five times the budget of his last movie, Evil Aliens (I don't count Pumpkinhead as a real West flick, that was just a director-for-hire job) and he seems to have spent every penny wisely.
The cast are uniformly good, giving real personaities to Dan Schaffer's characters. The film looks and sounds terrific and the pacing, for the most part, is just right. There are some great make-up effects and the kills, while more restrained than the mayhem in Evil, are nice and splashy.
Also have to mention that my future wife (best not shout it though, she doesn't actually know yet), the ever-lovely Emily Booth gives it 110% as 'The Snipper'. I have to admit, I'd have been tempted to stop running and let her have her evil way with me, even under all that make-up!!

All in all, a very entertaining, very British slice of comedy-horror that should earn Jake a lot more fans. If you saw Lesbian Vampire Killers and were non too impressed, please don't be put off - THIS is how to make a fun Brit genre movie.
"Right. Back door's locked, kettle's on". Nice one.
I bet you think you know all about vampires ... believe me, you know f@*& all.

I thought the Last House On The Left remake was surprisingly decent, good to see it's not been toned down for a teen audience like so many other remakes...

The Killing Machine - pretty ok Sonny Chiba flick, really bad dubbing. I wonder if the 'cutting of a cock and feeding it to a dog' scene inspired Hostel 2.

The Peacock king - Fantasy kinda stuff from the director of Story of Ricky. No buckets of gore in this one but some nice cheesy special effects. Worth the watch.

Samurai Commando - like GI samurai based on the story Timeslip. Liked this one a lot less then GI samurai. Took things a bit too far with the oil refinery and the nuclear bomb. Add some pretty lame cgi and you have a pretty lame movie.

Barbarian queen - nice and trashy bit of fun.

A Chinese vampire story - aka Mr Vampire 3 I believe. Great stuff, gotta love them hopping vampires. Some great WTF moments as well, like the guy getting pissed on by one of the little ghost boys, and the fight against vampires while having the wasabi shits haha.

9 deaths of the ninja - amazing movie, laughed my ass of. The title has nonthing to do with the story at all, but it doesn't matter. Midgets, Nazi's, topless scubadivers, I don't know where to begin. HIghly reccomended in a double bill with Raw Force.

Robo Vampire - wow, Chinese Robocop vs hopping vampires, low budget sillyness. I loved it.

Boy A - meh.

Kung Fu zombie - more Asian whackness. Loved it.

Shaolin vs terminator - Indonesian flick with 'funny english dubbing' by some comedian. I didn't really like it, this movie was crazy enough without the dubbing. Would love to see the origional version.

The rape scene's a bit different to the one in the original, but just as nasty.

Went to see it today out of morbid curiosity as to whether it would be any better than the original - I thought the original had a decent idea, but it was so badly acted and sloppily made that it was pretty pants overall.

I think the remake's better, they change some bits for the better - Krug's son is a much better character and the guy playing Krug looks like much more of an evil bastard than the guy in the original, and it's actually pretty shocking in places (the bit with the broken nose fixing - eww!), whereas the original tried to be shocking but never managed it.

And I thought the kills were pretty good, and that scene at the very end is just nuts!!!... Overall I'd say it's an improvement on the original, but that's hardly saying much, it's not rubbish, but it's no masterpiece either.

and I think it definitely falls into the torture porn category - it too gruesome and the story line's too nasty to be classed as anything else really.

I saw Doghouse today (surprised to only see it in one cinema in Leicester Square at one showing at 21:05!)

Great movie, lot's of fun and giggles throughout. I agree on Notts Pete's mini review earlier; the cast had great individual characters and the make-up effects/film & sound were definately a step up from previous titles. Will be a buy for me when it hits DVD/Bluray!!

Did anyone notice the logo on the mini-bus?

Another night, another remake. Went to see Last House on the Left. Not a patch on the original with regards to the terrorizing, deaths and vengeance. Thought there were far too much close ups, to point of looking up the actress's nostril.

Two nasty instances in the film and then copped out entirely. To a very lacklustre unbelieveable ending. I really wanted the parents to go looking for blood and wreak vengeance. Really was not all convinced by their supposed anger. Very much a watered down version of the original.

Also watched Red Cliff. A very slow twenty minutes at the start. Which sent me to snoozville. Then woke up to the interesting part about army strategy. Which at least kept me awake. The film looked stunning with the John Woo's trademark of doves. Rather enjoyed the battle scenes but not a film i can watch again.

Managed to see Doghouse yesterday. Pretty much agree with Notts Pete's review- very funny, well acted and scripted. Shameful the amount of screens that it is showing on. I know I live in the wilderness (rural Essex)but without wishing to go to London to see the film, I had to travel 15 miles for my nearest screening. It is such a shame that such a prime example of British horror is neglected whilst often inferior overseas product is widely released.

Well, there's something you don't see every day: a remake that's better than the original. However, in the case of The Last House On The Left that isn't difficult as the Wes Craven original is a despicable, nasty, mean-spirited piece of work which I can happily bear to never see again, and in all honesty if I'd been on the jury for its obscenity trial I'd have had a hard time arguing for its acquittal.

Mercifully the central scenes of torture, humiliation and rape have been toned down and while they're still uncomfortably brutal, there's less of it, and they don't have that gloating quality that I've always felt Craven's film had: that as part of the exploitation movie ethic the audience is supposed, deep down, to be enjoying this (and the original is usually classed as an exploitation film). Well, somehow I've never been able to get in touch with my Inner Misogynist Bastard, so I've always found sequences of sexual violence deeply uncomfortable.

While the film does manage to recapture the grainy look of old Grindhouse movies far more successfully than Grindhouse itself actually did (too long, too glossy, too expensive), and manages to feel like a 70s movie (despite the obligatory cellphone "No Signal" moment - where are they, the third moon of Jupiter?), I'm not sure that's actually enough. Last night there were only eight people in there and my local bughouse hasn't bothered retaining it for a second week.

Re: Saw 5.
Yeah well, once you're locked in on a horror franchise I reckon you're kind of honour bound to see all of them no matter how bad it gets. Its like a horror fan's rites of passage to watch dreadful sequels. It's not a choice, it's a duty dammit !!

I may make an exception for any further "Reeker" films however.
