Saw Daybreakers this afternoon and liked it a lot more than I thought I would - it's fast, enjoyable, with good production values and despite the BBFC trims for a 15, pleasantly splattery. (I guess the DVD will have the six seconds reinstated as an Extreme Version.) And it's good to see established, reputable, Proper Actors appearing in genre fare.

The Road - very solid adaptation of Cormack McCarthy's excellent novel, the use of real locations rather going for a CG created apocalyptic landscape both serves to differentiate this from the glut of apocalypse features we've seen of late, and brings the bleak vision closer to home. The actors are very fine, Mortensen superb as always (still my favorite movie Lucifer). The film downplays some of grimmer sections of the novel, the baby eating scene is notably gone, but I didn't mind the ommission.

Glad I saw this before Book of Eli comes out and its back to business as usual for apocalypse movies.

The Book Eli

Post-apocalyptic "western" that worked much better than The Road for me... although, if you loved The Road, I bet this doesn't measure up :)

Saw The Road last night , thought it was absolutely heartbreaking. Left me and my girl speechless on the slow walk home . Can't recommend it enough.

Have to say I enjoyed The Road more.. Even tough The Book of Eli looked really good and really like the idea of a man on a mission wandering through wasteland. Thought it got far too preachy at the end. Was expecting something else...

Recently I've seen... The Lovely Bones which I liked a lot although they did play it a bit safe and some important elements from the book were missing (no mention of Susie being raped as well as murdered, no mother having an affair with the cop) but overall it was an interesting adaptation with a few stand out scenes.

Precious which I think is getting way too much hype, yeah it was well acted and everything but every other cut was a fade to black which started to get on my nerves and it was all a bit formulaic as well as having a kind of happy ending and really I'm just not sure people with such miserable lives tend to find help so easily and successfully...

Last 2 weeks:

Deadly Outlaw: Rekka- Takashi MIike Yakuza movie, not his best, but still good entertainment.

Shinjuku Triad Society - 1st part of Takashi Miike's Black Society Trilogy. Liked it, pretty dark and disturbing in parts, very violent, good movie.

Zombies, wicked little things -Pretty average kid zombie movie, nothing special.

JCVD -I expected more action but still good stuff. Cool story and even some decent acting from Jean Claude himself (!)

Motorhome Massacre- Cheap slasher that takes a long time to get going. Ending is really lame. Lol at that wigger though haha.

Exit the dragon, enter the tiger - Martial arts movie exploiting Bruce Lee's death to make a few bucks. With Bruce Li, who's like a b-version clone of the real master.

Black roses - Cool metal horror movie about a demonic metal band terrorizing a small town. Some good effects, decent tunes and lots of cheese.

Rockula - Hard rock vampire comedy. Pretty whacky sometimes, the transformation bits were hilarious.

The Mad - Low budget zomedy with Billy Zane. Cheap and shitty, just the way I like it haha.

Rocktober Blood - Another Rock themed horror, very cheesy. Rainbow eyes is a tune!

Rock n Roll nightmare - and yet another Rock Horror, this one was very slow but the the last 20 minutes made up for it, some crazy man vs devil battle and what the fuck where those little one eyed things lol! Seen clips of this in some mixtapes, good to finally know where they were from.

Black Dynamite - I thought this was gonna be a serious movie but it turned out to be more like a Dolemite spoof. I thought it was amazing, some proper good laughs and action.

Lake Placid - Like this movie, and I've always had a soft spot for Bill Pullman.

Crocodile - the Tobe Hooper one. Quite entertaining with a very dodgy looking cgi croc.

Frogs - a bunch of frogs and other shitty creature get up to, well... not all that much in this lame snorefest.

Vampires - The John Carpenter one, liked it a lot but a bit too long.

Daybreakers a really solid entry into the vampire genre & i enjoyed it very much.
Would like to know what was trimmed from its version shown that Alan Jones saw at Cannes, great performances and a great stab at making vampires scary again.
The Book Of Eli
With this coming out in the wake of the road, which probably isnt being shown on as many screens as Eli is,there are a few comparisons they are both movies with a message and both film that deal with an event that changes the face of the world and humanity,a road movie,a western, with a great performance from denzel thats far better than his last in pelham 123,this will be overlooked come awards season but the look and feel of the landscape is faultless, the action choreography is superb,an amazing score too.
Really cant wait to see this again.

Well the dvd collection trawl continues, first stop The Hamiltons, a film I don't quite know wether I liked or not. As a family drama it played well, highlighting the rivalry and power struggle between siblings torn apart by the loss of their parents. As an out and out horror it does not work for me. So not a film i disliked but maybe one worth a second visit at some point in the future.

Then taking in something much more up to date, I gave Drag Me To Hell a spin. I missed this at Frightfest and on general release so it has been a film I have wanted to catch up with but never seemed to have the time. Now anyone that knows me knows that in horror there are two things I truly like, either some deranged nutter/psychopath/serial killer or a film that is gonna scare me sh*tless and that is what DMTH succeeded at, the last film to have such an effect on me was REC.

Ok yes it's pure fantasy stuff, far fetched and at times quite funny, probably best illustrated by the possessed/talking goat! However it does succeed at scaring the hell out of me, one of the key scenes being as she is alone in the house and the lamia is already inside, as she is in an upstairs bedroom it appears to be making its way under the door, it's shadow crawling under and it's hands reaching out to grab her, as she backs away the lamia (the demon from hell) is already behind her at the window. At that point, yours truly flew off the sofa!!

When I was younger, horror scared the pants off me and this was a great throwback to those days, I want to feel scared and I want to jump and scream and swear at shocks that I was not expecting. Mainstream US horror in 2009 really was not inspiring (The Unborn, Walled In and Haunting in Conneticut were all let downs for me, and don't even start me on the non stop flow of remakes) but DMTH restored a lot of faith.

And could there be a follow up, the ending was left open so it could happen, if it does I will be there. And if you don't know me, I will be the soft arse at the back hiding behind a cushion!

Well I did and I didn't

It was relentless and did not seem to let up in it's scares.

Great film and I would love to see Raimi stay back within the genre

Freaked Don't know why I haven't seen this before, it was awesome. A bit too silly at some times, but the end fight was just pure demented genius.

Lake Placid 2 Typical cheap sequal, cheap acters, cheap cgi effects, it seemed the voices were re-recorded and dubbed into the movie. Still good fun, but mostly because of how bad it was.

Bio Cops Unofficial sequal to Bio Zombie. Low Budget Hong Kong zombie stuff. Not all that bad, though talking zombies are quite lame.

The Road I've got mixed feelings about this one. The book didn't blow me away completely, it was a bit like oh no we're gonna die, oh no we got food, fuck we;re gonna die again, oh wait, not just yet. This was still the case in the movie, though less intense. I guess the book described the desperation of the main characters better, also the build up to the fathers death. At some points the visuals in the movie did do the story more justice, like the deserted landscapes and stuff. Some nasty bits from the book were left out, but then again the bit in the cannibal's basement proper creeped me out. NOt bad at all, but could have been better.

The Gingerdead man 2 Was missing Gary Busey, still good stupid fun though.

Punkrock Holocaust Extremely low budget punkrock gorefest. It says a lot when Lloyd Kaufman is the best actor in a movie haha. It dragged on for ages as well, but was obviously made with a lot of love for gore and punk rock, so there's no way I could not like this.

The Evil Cult Awesome old Jet Li flick. Some pretty spectaculair wire kung fu scenes, descent story (though a bit confusing at times) cool characters (the old guy in the stone ball was fucking awesome). Great fun!

Mega shark vs giant octopuss This was pretty lame, i mean, b movies with crappy rubber effects, or stop motion monsters are just waaaaay cooler then b movies with crappy cgi effects.

Ghoulies Much better then I expected, cheesy as hell but very decent.

Ghoulies 2 Even more fun then the first one, loved it. Don't know why I haven't seen these earlier, good thing I bought em all 4 on dvd.

The Book Of Eli... Pure Indoctrination trash... I expected that from Scientology camp but from the god squad... no.

At least make the film INTERESTING!
